In 2020, National Geographic named Edinburgh as one of the top forward-thinking cities in Europe due to its green credentials, including air quality and access to green spaces. Following the release of a Plant Based Treaty report by Edinburgh’s Policy and Sustainability Committee, on Tuesday, 17th January, a debate and vote will determine whether Edinburgh becomes the first city in Scotland to endorse the Plant Based Treaty.

What is the Plant Based Treaty?
|
|
|
Background:
- On 17 March 2022, councillor Steve Burgess from the Scottish Green Party submitted a motion to Edinburgh city council to endorse the Plant Based Treaty.
- The council chose not to vote on endorsing the Plant Based Treaty but instead ordered an assessment report to be completed to explore the implications of Edinburgh supporting the initiative and the impact of food systems on the climate crisis.
- A detailed 18 page report was published on 17th January 2023
- The report will be presented and discussed at a Policy and Sustainability Committee meeting on Tuesday 17th January and we need your help inviting councillors to vote for Edinburgh to endorse the Plant Based Treaty.
