WEEK OF JANUARY 16, 2023
  • It is Martin Luther King Day on Monday, Jan 16 - and you get the day off from classes in his honor. There are also several events on Campus to celebrate the Legacy of Dr. King. Check out this link to all MLK Day events this year. 
  • At noon, the Van Pelt and Opie Library will host an Interfaith Vigil and Reflection where our religious communities on campus will read excerpts from King’s works. Following the event,  the campus community is invited to gather at the Husky Statue at 1 p.m. for a peace march across campus.
  • Coffee Conversations
    • Monday, Jan 16th you are invited to stop by for Coffee Conversations at noon where we will have coffee and snacks and also take a moment to bid farewell to Vlad Silkin, our visiting Fulbright scholar who will be returning to Russia after his semester here at MTU.

Thurs Jan 19 5-6:30 pm: Explore Majors in Social Sciences Open House (in the Library)
  • This  drop-in style event will be in the MTU Library East Reading Room from 5-6:30 on Thurs.  Students can learn about majors and concentrations within the Social Sciences department, including: Anthropology, History, Policy and Community Development, Social Sciences, Policy, Law and Society, and Sustainability Science and Society.
  • There will be pizza and snacks.
  • Faculty and current students will be on hand to discuss options and share experiences.
  • All current or future MTU students with some curiosity about any of these majors or the Social Sciences department are welcome!
Coffee Convos Getting new time:  Starting Next Week - Tuesday, Jan 24th - and for the rest of the semester we are moving Coffee Conversations to Tuesday afternoons 3:15 to 4:15 pm.  Stop by and have a snack and say hi. Put the new date and time on your calendars!

Social Scientists in Action
  • Dr. Melissa Baird, Marie Richards (IHA), and Talva Jacobson (IHA) recently presented their work at the Association of Critical Heritage Studies (ACHS) biennial and international conference hosted by the Center for Intercultural and Indigenous Studies.
    • ACHS is an international association with over 2,500 members across the globe that seeks to advance heritage as a critical location of study. Dr. Melissa Baird is the ACHS President.

  • The Dept. of Social Sciences is now an institutional member of the Historical Society of Michigan. One of the perks is being able to attend their online History Hounds™ lectures for free. They have a number coming up over the next two months that alternate Tuesdays at noon and Wednesday at 7pm. Registration is open for those up through early March, listed below and full info on them all here
    • In order to register, go to the registration page and use your MTU email to sign up (it will also then create an account for you to send you the talk links and notifications on future HSM activities). On the form indicate you are an ‘A member of an HSM member organization’ and then enter “Department of Social Sciences” in the field for member organization (it should autofill after you start typing ‘Depar…”).

    • CHESS 2023 will be held in London, Ontario the weekend of 26-28 May 2023, immediately before the Canadian Historical Association meets at York U in Toronto.

  • Ohio State University is looking for two paid summer research interns to work on a CDC-NIOSH funded project looking at childcare for farm families.
    • The internship is a 40-hour/week commitment that runs May 31-Aug 9.
    • The internship can be virtual or in-person at NFMC in Marshfield, WI.

  • Departmental Analyst Trainee 9-12 for the State of Michigan.
    • The duties of the position will include monitoring weather and climate forecasts, the expected impact in Michigan in the near and long term, and how such forecasts impact Michigan’s electric distribution grid. The duties also includes representing the Commission as a distribution planning expert at stakeholder forums and keeping sections of  the Commission's website up to date.

  • The Coastal & Great Lakes Social Science Lab in the Department of Forestry & Natural Resources at Purdue are recruiting a MS student to work on aquatic invasive species (AIS) issues in the Great Lakes region starting in the fall of 2023.
    • The student will conduct interviews, focus groups, and surveys to understand the attitudes and outreach programming needs of two key groups: teachers and members of the culinary industry.
