LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

Note from Michele / SLARA Executive Director:

We at SLARA have been lobbying full-time throughout these past 10 months to protect and promote our independent restaurant and bar community.  Some of the things we have been accomplished as we approach our next legislative session:
  • ONE-ON-ONE MEETINGS:  Our full-time lobbying firm, Lincoln-Hill, has procured private meetings for us with:
    • Speaker of the House Brad Wilson
    • Senator Jerry Stephenson (Senate alcohol liaison)
    • Representative Jeff Burton (House alcohol liaison)
  • LEGISLATIVE POLICY WORKING GROUP: SLARA participated in a small group of stakeholders who met monthly in the Legislative Alcohol Policy Working Group meetings.  It enabled us to present pressing issues directly to legislators in charge of formulating the omnibus alcohol bill in the next session
  • DABS:  Meetings throughout the year with the Executive Director of the DABS to keep apprised of issues affecting independent owners
  • DABS COMMISSION MEETINGS:  Monthly representation at the DABS Commission meetings
  • PARTNERSHIPS: Partnerships and board seats with the SLCo Health Department, Visit Salt Lake, Utah Tourism Industry Association, Utah Association of Local Health Departments, Salt Lake Community College Culinary Institute, Salt Lake City Corp and Salt Lake County as well as the Food Safety Advisory Board with the Utah Department of Health.
THIS SESSION
What we know now is that there will be two major alcohol-related bills.  The first will be released in the first couple of days of the session and will address changes to accommodate the NBA All-Star game.  We have received word that there might be a few bar licenses released before further addressing the issue in the Omnibus bill later in the session.  This bill is slated to go to the governor for signature before the end of January.

The second bill will address issues we have been working on but no word on what exactly will be examined in that bill except we do know there will be an appropriation for a study to see how Utah demographics have changed and the further need for more restaurant and bar licenses to accommodate that.

Naturally, nothing is in writing until it is in writing, so we will keep you, our members, updated as we move toward the session.  Stay tuned!

VISIT SALT LAKE PARTNERSHIP

SLARA is grateful for all the assistance and support we have gotten from Visit Salt Lake in the past couple of years.  They value the independent restaurant and bar community and appreciate all our industry has done to help promote tourism.

They have graciously offered a $100 discount to any SLARA members that are not currently a member of Visit Salt Lake if they join prior to the January or within 30 days of joining SLARA.  We hope you will support their mission to promote tourism to Salt Lake County and know you will find value in all they do to help our industry thrive.

To take advantage of a Visit Salt Lake membership, email Judy Cullen.

SALES TAX FAQ

Just a reminder:
  • You must remit sales tax on gratutities that are automatically added to bills.  For example, if you charge 20% for parties over 6, that 20% gratituty is subject to sales tax
  • You must remit sales tax on employee meals for your staff, whether you charge your employee for the food or not

These are items that came up in recent member audits.  Now you know!

SALT LAKE COUNTY CONVENTIONS

Tourism suffered throughout the United States during and after COVID.  However, Utah didn't suffer as other states across the nation did.  Why?  We have Visit Salt Lake working on our behalf.

Attached is a list of conventions in Salt Lake County for January and February.  As you can see, we have almost 300,000 people coming in from out of state, ready to support our local independently-owned restaurants and bars.

To see how you can connect with our visitors directly, contact Visit Salt Lake's membership team at 801.534.4900 or email Judy Cullen at jcullen@visitsaltlake.com.
