10 Points About Arts Education by Elliot Eisner
Elliot Eisner was a visionary in the field of arts and education. He maintained that the arts were critical to developing skills in young students:
1. The arts teach children to make good judgments about qualitative relationships.
Unlike much of the curriculum in which correct answers and rules prevail, in the arts, it
is judgment rather than rules that prevail.
2. The arts teach children that problems can have more than one solution
and that questions can have more than one answer.
3. The arts celebrate multiple perspectives.
One of their large lessons is that there are many ways to see and interpret the world.
4. The arts teach children that in complex forms of problem solving purposes are seldom fixed, but change with circumstance and opportunity.
Learning in the arts requires the ability and a willingness to surrender to the unanticipated possibilities of the work as it unfolds.
5. The arts make vivid the fact that neither words in their literal form nor numbers exhaust what we can know.
The limits of our language do not define the limits of our cognition.
6. The arts teach students that small differences can have large effects.
The arts traffic in subtleties.
7. The arts teach students to think through and within a material.
All art forms employ some means through which images become real.
8. The arts help children learn to say what cannot be said.
When children are invited to disclose what a work of art helps them feel, they must reach into their poetic capacities to find the words that will do the job.
9. The arts enable us to have experience we can have from no other source and through such experience to discover the range and variety of what we are capable of feeling.
10. The arts’ position in the school curriculum symbolizes to the young what adults believe is important.

Monday, January 16th is a special day to remember the civil rights movement leader Martin Luther King. I want to encourage parents to speak to their children about the importance of giving back to community. Please visit the AmeriCoprs website to learn about service opportunities.

Ruth Beaglehole Parent Support Group
Ruth has returned from her extended travels to New Zealand! She is excited to rekindle the work she'd started with the parents in the first semester. Parents are encouraged to read or review the first chapter of Brain - Body Parenting by Mona Dellahooke. If you are interested in joining us as we begin our book discussions, you are welcome to buy the book or stop by the Main Office to check-out a copy. See you on Tuesday, January 24th at 8:15am in the school garden.

Groceries for Families

Over the last couple of years, Jen O'Connor has been harvesting vegetables from the school garden and procuring donations to create gift bags for families from our school.
She is looking to expand her operation and is looking for families who are interested in donating about an hour on Wednesday, January 25th at 10:30am. We hope you will make time to participate in this incredible endeavor.

WeBreak is a hip-hop dance company that specializes in teaching breaking to kids. We use our very own proprietary curriculum where students learn toprock, footwork and freezes. In our teaching of basic & intermediate concepts and moves, we encourage students to express themselves through dance, build confidence, and develop a positive team environment - all while having fun!

To all our parents (male and female) who are interested in participating in the first ever Elysian Heights Soccer team, we would like to invite you to the Los Silver Lake Invitational on February 5th! This would be an opportunity to watch the current teams in action and begin to plan for starting our team for next years league.

10 puntos sobre la educación artística de Elliot Eisner
Elliot Eisner fue un visionario en el campo de las artes y la educación. Sostuvo que las artes eran fundamentales para desarrollar habilidades en los jóvenes estudiantes:
1. Las artes enseñan a los niños a hacer buenos juicios sobre las relaciones cualitativas.
A diferencia de gran parte del currículo en el que prevalecen las reglas y las respuestas correctas, en las artes,
es el juicio más que las reglas lo que prevalece.
2. Las artes enseñan a los niños que los problemas pueden tener más de una solución
y que las preguntas pueden tener más de una respuesta.
3. Las artes celebran múltiples perspectivas.
Una de sus grandes lecciones es que hay muchas formas de ver e interpretar el mundo.
4. Las artes enseñan a los niños que en las formas complejas de resolución de problemas, los propósitos rara vez son fijos, sino que cambian con las circunstancias y las oportunidades.
El aprendizaje de las artes requiere la capacidad y la voluntad de rendirse a las posibilidades imprevistas del trabajo a medida que se desarrolla.
5. Las artes hacen vívido el hecho de que ni las palabras en su forma literal ni los números agotan lo que podemos saber.
Los límites de nuestro lenguaje no definen los límites de nuestra cognición.
6. Las artes enseñan a los estudiantes que las pequeñas diferencias pueden tener grandes efectos.

7. Las artes enseñan a los estudiantes a pensar a través y dentro de un material.

Usamos nuestro propio plan de estudios patentado donde los estudiantes aprenden toprock, juego de pies y congelaciones. En nuestra enseñanza de conceptos y movimientos básicos e intermedios, alentamos a los estudiantes a expresarse a través del baile, generar confianza y desarrollar un ambiente de equipo positivo, ¡todo mientras se divierten!
