Swedish EU Presidency has Started

During the first half of 2023, Sweden holds the presidency of the Council of the EU. Sweden has identified four priorities for the work under its third presidency of the Council:

  • Security – unity
  • Competitiveness
  • Green & Energy Transition
  • Democratic values and the rule of law – our foundation
The Swedish presidency will prioritize continued economic and military support for Ukraine, as well as support for Ukraine’s path toward the EU. Europe's Largest Deposit of Rare Earth Metals is located in the Kiruna Area

LKAB has identified significant deposits of rare earth elements in the Kiruna area, metals which are essential for, among other applications, the manufacture of electric vehicles and wind turbines. Following successful exploration, the company today reports mineral resources of rare earth metals exceeding one million tonnes of rare earth oxides and the largest known deposit of its kind in Europe.

“This is good news, not only for LKAB, the region and the Swedish people, but also for Europe and the climate. This is the largest known deposit of rare earth elements in our part of the world, and it could become a significant building block for producing the critical raw materials that are absolutely crucial to enable the green transition. We face a supply problem. Without mines, there can be no electric vehicles,” says Jan Moström, President and Group CEO, LKAB.

Nordic Outlook: Time to get Inflation Down

2023 will be shaped by efforts to bring down inflation, and if all goes well, a mild recession should be enough to rebalance the economy. However, it is a difficult task for central banks to achieve, and there is a risk of a deep recession or inflation to become more ingrained, writes Danske Bank’s macroeconomists in a new Nordic Outlook analysis.

Heading into a recession, the Nordic countries have a strong starting point. Compared to most other

European countries, the Nordic countries have been less damaged during the Covid crisis, and have recovered more quickly. Government finances are generally in good shape, and measures to help households and businesses cope with inflation are comparatively modest.

12 Years of the World’s Top 10 Most Innovative Countries – Sweden ranked No. 3 in the world 2022

Every year, the UN’s World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) scores countries on how innovative their economies are with the Global Innovation Index.

The Index scores countries on indicators of a strong innovation economy. These include R&D spend, general market strength, patent systems and output, and local labor capital. And though a few countries

consistently rank high, others are moving in and out of the top 10 rankings. Switzerland together with seven other countries have been in the top 10 in each year, including Sweden, Singapore, and the United States. Other countries across Europe also feature prominently in the top 10, the United Kingdom (#4) and the Netherlands (#5). With 15 of the top 25 economies in the world, Europe is a powerhouse for fostering innovative ecosystems. The continent is also a leader in social progress, equality, and life satisfaction. The region scores 30 on inequality according to the Gini Index compared to 41 for America.

Why Stockholm is a Great City for Entrepreneurs

Innovation is in the air in Stockholm, fuelled by a strong profile in tech and a culture of cooperation. It’s what led to the birth of unicorns like Spotify, Skype and Klarna, and how the city earned its global reputation as a breeding ground for entrepreneurial talent.

“We’re in a comfortable position, but what I love about Stockholm is people take that comfort and add a lot of discomfort! They try to solve hard problems. Perhaps it’s inspired

by the Nobel Prizes being here and Sweden being a key contributor in driving global development,” says Innocent Mugenga, entrepreneur and founder of EdTech startup Learnability.

Nobel Prizes aside, Stockholm’s innovative climate is no happy accident. An abundance of hubs, co-working spaces, incubators and accelerators can be found peppered throughout the city. The stage is set for entrepreneurs from all backgrounds to meet, share knowledge and ideas, and support one another’s business ventures.
