The Life and Legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) was one of America's most influential civil rights movement leaders. His life and achievements are celebrated annually on the third Monday of January. The federal holiday, which will be observed on January 16 this year, is designated as a National Day of Service. Americans are encouraged to spend the holiday volunteering to improve their communities.

MLK was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 15, 1929. He grew up in a world where Blacks and Whites led disparate lives. They went to different schools, ate at different restaurants, and even sat in specially assigned seats on buses and trains. The young man believed segregation was a way of life across the country. He learned to accept it.

That changed in 1944 when he went to work in the tobacco fields in Hartford, Connecticut. In a letter to his father, the then-15-year-old MLK said, "After we passed Washington, there was no discrimination. The white people here are very nice. We go to any place we want to and sit anywhere we want to." It was a few years before MLK began the fight to bring similar equality to the Southern States. But the seed had been planted.

MLK's pursuit for racial equality began in earnest in December 1955. That's when civil rights activist Rosa Parks was arrested for not giving up her bus seat to a White passenger. Upset at the injustice, MLK asked the city's African American residents to avoid taking public buses. The Montgomery bus boycott lasted an entire year and even spread to other Southern States. The first-ever joint effort to fight racial discrimination did not go unnoticed. In 1956, the United States Supreme Court ruled segregation on public transportation illegal.

Encouraged by the success, MLK urged citizens across the country to fight segregation policies by staging peaceful sit-ins, boycotts, and marches. The activist became famous for his inspiring speeches. The most memorable one was delivered in 1963.

The events leading to the often quoted ‘I Have A Dream’ address began in June 1963. That's when President John F. Kennedy asked the US Congress to approve the Civil Rights Act, giving all Americans equal access to public places. To persuade government officials to sign it into law, civil rights leaders encouraged citizens to stage a peaceful rally in Washington, DC. It was here that MLK, standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, revealed his dream of living in a country where everyone was treated equally.

The first major milestone towards achieving MLK's dream came with the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It ended segregation in public places. The Voting Rights Act of 1965, allowing African Americans to exercise their right to vote in US elections, followed soon after. The Fair Housing Act of 1968, prohibiting racial discrimination in the sale, rental, or financing of property, was the final victory in assuring equal rights for all Americans. Unfortunately, MLK did not live to see a segregation-free America. He was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968.

MLK's courage and efforts have allowed all Americans to follow their dreams. It is now up to us to protect his precious legacy by standing up to societal injustices and helping those in need. This January 16, create your legacy by helping community members not just for a single day but on an ongoing basis.

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day!

"What It Means to Give Back"

Our students are constantly being taught what it means to serve and give back to their community in real time! Every Thursday, they dedicate a part of their learning time to pre-packing boxes for the M.A.N.N.A food pantry of Love Involves Family Everyday, Inc. that serves over 100 families weekly. There is joy in giving and serving others. We are so proud of our students!

Evangelism for Normal People PT 2

HERE ARE FOUR REASONS WE DON’T LIKE DOING EVANGELISM:

1. Only weird people do evangelism.

When we think of evangelism, we have images in our head of people who are carrying signs that communicate angry, harsh dogma that immediately turn people off. We think of open-air preachers spewing off about hell. We think of situations where people have come up to us out of the blue, forcing calculated wisdom upon us we haven’t asked for, in simplistic one-size- fits-all packaging.

2. Our culture hates evangelism.

Then we start thinking about people’s response to this kind of evangelism, and we’re left with a bad taste in our mouths for our own culture, campus, neighbors, and families. We hope they don’t have to experience anything of the sort. And we understand why they would despise these methods of sharing Jesus.

I want to stop here for a second because I want to address something that seems fairly clear to me. If only weird people are doing evangelism it makes sense that our culture harbors disdain toward it. Normal people have to start leading the charge in sharing the gospel in order for our culture to not immediately brush it off as weird and undesirable.

Single and Satisfied is a ministry of the Family Life Missionary Baptist Church that caters to all unmarried, young, and seasoned adults aged 16 and over. This power-packed ministry holds informative and interactive sessions on how to honor God in the single season of life at various locations around the Atlanta area on a monthly basis and via Zoom on the second Monday of every month at 7 pm. At the close of those sessions, those in attendance and any of their guests are invited to a recreational outing at other various locations around the Atlanta area or online. Although our sessions for this year have concluded, we want to extend a huge thanks to all of our guests and guest facilitators that came to our Zoom and in-person sessions and outings. We wish you all a very blessed, purposeful, and safe holiday season and look forward to fellowshipping with you again in 2023.

23 Healthy New Year’s Resolutions You

Can Actually Keep

A new year often signifies a fresh start for many people. For some, this means setting health goals, such as losing weight, following a healthier diet, and starting an exercise routine. However, more often than not, the health and wellness resolutions chosen are highly restrictive and unsustainable, leading most people to break their resolutions within a few weeks. To break that cycle, it’s important to make resolutions that can not only improve health but also be followed for life.  Here are some resolutions you can keep.

1.    Eat more whole foods
2.    Sit less, move more
3.    Cut back on sweetened beverages
4.    Get more quality sleep
5.    Find a physical activity you enjoy

Reading Spot

As we still bask in the new year, this is a great time to designate your "reading spot"! Now I know you are probably wondering, 'what is a reading spot'? Simply put, it's a place you have created to get cozy behind a book. It is the spot you have created just for reading. This month I am sharing 4 Tips on creating the perfect reading spot!

1. Your reading spot should be in a quiet place. This may be a place in your home, such as a corner in a room, the closet, or even the garage. It can also be a place outdoors. Find what works for you!

2. Once you have chosen the space, make it cozy. You want your area to feel warm and inviting. Adding a few throw pillows, a throw blanket, and a nice rug can help create that comfortable space. You can even add a comfortable chair or bean bag. Choose what works best for you.

3. Next, put your favorite books and current reads in that space. It will help remind you that it is your reading spot, and you'll always know where to find your recent books.

4. Lastly, grab your favorite drink, head to your reading spot, and start reading!

Do you have a reading spot? And if not, did you find these tips helpful? Let me know! Please email me at trunaegreen@gmail.com. As always, Happy Reading!

Happy New Year.
The following may increase the depth of Bible study.

NIV Bible Customer Review

NIV Review by Robert C. Rogers
1. In March 2011, the copyright owners of the most popular modern translation of the Bible in English, the New International Version (NIV), published the first revision of the NIV since 1984.
2. As a pastor who did not like the overreaching political correctness of the Today's New International Version (TNIV, copyright 2002), I was concerned when I heard that the NIV itself was going to be revised. But after studying the digital early release version in numerous passages, I have been pleased that it is more accurate, but disappointed that while the use of gender-neutral language does not go as far as the TNIV, it still goes too far.
3. The new NIV retains 95% of the words of the 1984 edition, but where there are changes, it communicates the original meaning better to modern readers and more accurately than before.
4. Let me address several issues: gender-neutral language, omission of words, and accuracy of translation.
5. First, the most controversial issue of the TNIV (the earlier failed attempt to revise the NIV) was its gender-neutral language. The Southern Baptist Convention passed a resolution in June 2011 saying they "cannot commend" the 2011 NIV. Why is that? The 2011 NIV does not go as far as the TNIV. In Hebrews 12, where scripture speaks of God disciplining us like a father, the TNIV changed "father" to "parent." This implied that God was a gender-neutral "parent" rather than our "heavenly Father."

“Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You”  (Psalm 119:11).

1. The Bible is packed with powerful principles, insights that can guide us, wisdom to help make decisions, and truths to shape our lives. But we can’t receive these benefits unless we know the Word.
2. On the surface, this can seem like a daunting task. Looking at the Bible, we can be intimidated by its length, complexity, number of books, and verses. But the task doesn’t seem so overwhelming if we break this down into smaller parts. All it takes to read the Bible in a year is to read a few chapters every day.
3. Reading the Bible is a discipline that can change your life. Many guides are available that provide daily reading goals. You also can just read a few chapters a day, beginning with Genesis and continuing through Revelation.
4. As you read, ask God for discernment and understanding. Don’t just read, but think about what you read. Meditate on a verse or passages, for example, a passage from your daily reading. Pray about the passage, asking God for insights to help you understand the meaning. Then, reflect on the passage throughout the day. And, as God leads, memorize verses. These memorized verses will come to mind when you most need them.
5. Make this a year with a renewed commitment to read the Bible. Pray about the Word. Study the Word. Meditate on the Word. Apply its truths in your life.
6. Hear/Read the Word.
7. Believe the Word.
8. Become/Practice the Word.
9. Obey the Word!
10. What is your Bible reading plan for 2023?
