The Partnership Team for Sandia Baptist Church met this past Monday evening at 6:30 p.m. to discuss needed resources to assist Sandia in their revitalization efforts. Those present were our DOM, Dave McFadden; Tar Henderson and Rick Britain with the BCNM, John Birkey (Associate Pastor at Sandia) and his wife, Hillary; Dean Turvaville (Lead Pastor at Sandia) and his wife, Dezra; Cheston Fair, Pastor at FBC Elida; Tyler Hicks, Pastor of Restoration Baptist in Clovis and Jake Gill, member at Restoration Baptist; and Anthony Griffith, Associate Pastor at Calvary Baptist Portales. Parkland Clovis and FBC Dora are also partnering with Sandia but were unable to be represented at the meeting.

The meeting began with prayer, followed with Pastor Dean filling the group in on the progress that has been made at the church up to this point. Dean shared that attendance is now between 40 and 50. He also said that the church has experienced an increase in giving, with anticipated receipts in 2023 being at around $160,000. With this in mind, the church approved the previous Sunday, a budget of $196,000, a faith budget. The entire congregation is currently going through what will be the church's membership class, which will be used in the future to orient new members as part of their joining the church.

Pastor Dean then relayed plans the church has for 2023 and the group brainstormed about what resources might help the church carry them out. The church is having a workday on February 18th. They will have a relaunch event in July, where they will have a block party and give out school supplies to families whose children attend Sandia Elementary School. That school is across the street from the church building. Plans are underway to help the church with building needs, such as HVAC repairs and/or replacement. Additionally, the church will be doing some remodeling work in the worship center, using the help of the Volunteer Christian Builders. Arrangements are also being made to assess the need for technology upgrades in the worship center.

Much discussion also took place around the need for help with Sunday school, especially in the areas of preschool/nursery, children, and youth. The church is looking to raise up workers, but needs folks with skills in these areas to help for an extended period of time until leaders from Sandia can be cultivated and trained.

The Partnership team will have their next meeting on Monday, February 20th.

The Tri-Area Preaching Workshop will be held at FBC Melrose on Saturday, February 25th, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with lunch provided by Tri-Area Baptist Association. It will be led again by Dr. Joe Bunce. So far, 19 individuals have signed up for the workshop. Those wanting to join them, simply need to text Dave and tell him so, at 575-607-5495.

WHAT IS DISCIPLE NOW?

Disciple Now is an in-town (Portales) weekend retreat designed to help middle and high school students connect with God and grow in their relationship with Him.

WHAT ARE THE DATES?

Friday, March 31st and Saturday, April 1st.

WHAT DOES IT COST?

• $40 per student.
• This covers, t-shirt, devotional journal and food!

WHAT DO I BRING?

• Bible, journal, pen/pencil.
• Clothes, Jacket, etc.
• Athletic wear.
• Electronics are discouraged.
• Toiletries, Towel.
• Bedding, pillow, sleeping bag.
• Water Bottle.

WHERE DO I STAY?

Depending on your church, students will stay at church member Host Homes. That’s where your small group will eat and sleep.

On the campus of the New Mexico’s Baptist Children’s Home in Portales, NM.

WHAT WILL BE THE THEME?

There are few things more powerful than witnessing someone throw all of themselves after a cause or a commitment. When we as people get behind something with all our energy and focus, it’s remarkable what we can do.

The opposite is true as well. So often we see the broken results of someone giving only a portion of their focus and energy to something – a cause, a task, a relationship. Half-hearted commitment is really no commitment at all.

This is especially true when it comes to our faith. The Bible is clear: God expects and deserves our undivided affection and commitment. Anything less falls short of who we are called to be as Christ-followers. With God’s power we can experience an undivided devotion to God, that will bring us life everlasting.

WHO WILL BE THE SPEAKER?

Garrett lives in Dallas, Texas with his wife Rachel and his sons Graham and Grayson. He has traveled 18+ years nationally and globally and spoken at outreach events, BCNM camps, conferences, etc. Garrett seeks to advance the Gospel from generation to generation through passionate proclamation.

Austin lives in Santo, Texas with his wife Ellyn and his daughter Taya. He has served in ministry for 10+ years in youth, worship, and now family pastor roles at FBC Santo and is a physical therapist on the side.

The first Family Mission Retreat led by New Mexico WMU was held at Sivells January 13-14. Melissa Lamb, New Mexico WMU Director and her husband, Beau, pastor of FBC Santa Rosa, led the event. Several families from around the state served on the planning team and helped. Five missionary families, three people who had been on mission trips, and the Christian Challenge participated. Activities throughout the weekend focused on four aspects of missions: learning about missions, praying for missions, supporting missions, and doing missions.

Learning about missions: Friday night, everyone participated in a Scavenger Hunt to learn about the different missionaries and countries. The WMU International Missions study for 2023 is on the Philippines. A Filipino couple from Santa Rosa attended and shared all about the Philippines and made food that everyone loved.

Praying for missions: A New Mexico student serving on the IMB Nehemiah Team in the Asian Pacific Rim sent a video about their work and there was a specific prayer time for her and the team. (The Nehemiah team is a program for students who spend a year overseas on the mission field.) There was also a wonderful prayer time for New Mexico IMB missionaries who sent hand prints/pics. Participants were able to "lay hands" on their hands as they prayed for specific requests.

Supporting missions: Different families/groups made "thank you" videos to send to the missionaries. It was a fun time. They were very creative with some being serious and others funny. These will be emailed to missionaries.

Doing missions: Mario and Thar Ventura now live in Santa Rosa but they were members of Natividad Bible Baptist Community Church in the Philippines. This church does numerous VBS events. Participants made 500 craft kits for the church to use this summer with the children.

The Family Mission Retreat was wonderful time for the whole family to connect to missions. Look for more of these events in the future and make plans to attend!

We will have the Clovis schools music tech Matthew Wolfe here to help teach us some great hands-on lessons about sound systems, lighting, and Audio/Video systems. Roy Martin, Worship Pastor at Parkland Baptist in Clovis, will help us with technical learning on worship programs, video production, and conversion for worship.

This will be a great “hands-on” conference! The training will be at Parkland Baptist in Clovis and will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude with lunch, provided by Tri-Area Baptist Association.

Dyanne Frazier, member of University Baptist in Portales, has gone to Kenya the past 13 years to participate in mission endeavors there. Recently, she presented Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with an opportunity to participate in a project to drill a water well for a community there that will be used by the entire village. Pleasant Hill has voted to contribute to this project and wants to also invite other Tri-Area churches to join them.

Below are the details of the project.

BOREHOLE PROPOSAL

Jamii Outreach Ministries Kenya is registered under the Societies Act and its primary mandate is to carry out community-based projects in Kenya. They have a project in the sprawling slums of Kibera where they offer quality education in line with the current Competence Based Curriculum (CBC), as well as a daily feeding program. Their goal as an Organization is to provide quality education and better living standards for the less fortunate and orphaned children.

They have a farm located in Nyandarua County, one of the semi-arid areas of Kenya. The main activities carried out in this area are cattle rearing and subsistence farming. The annual rainfall in the area is approximately 500mm, which is too low to support the people as well as livestock. The main source of water in the area is man-made water pans which are shared with the animals as well. The area is prone to droughts, and there is no stable source of water.

Their desire is to drill a borehole in this area to enable them to supply clean drinking water to the surrounding community. They also plan to use some of the water in an agricultural project to increase food security in the area and also supply the produce to some of their partners such as Jamii Orphanage Nakuru.

FINANCIAL NEED

They have been able to do the initial survey which established the point where they are to drill. The depth of the borehole is estimated to be 200 meters. The pricing of the drilling process as well as fitting of a pump and general development was estimated as follows:

ITEM COST (USD)

1. Drilling and general development of the well at 200 meters - $14,240

2. Authorization permits and county council permits - $1,200

3. Supply and equipping of pump set - $5,000

TOTAL - $20,440

This is a rough estimate of the capital required to initiate the project. When the drilling is done they will use the water to improve the living standards of the people in the region. They also hope to use it as an income generating activity to help boost their work in empowering the needy and orphaned children in Nairobi and Nakuru as well as across the country as they grow.

Michael & Kari MacKenzie

Dr. Michael MacKenzie is the executive director of Marble Retreat in Marble, Colorado (learn more about Marble Retreat by clicking HERE to go to their website). Mike has been a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) for 26 years. Kari has been a Psychotherapist for 17 years. Both have completed their Doctorate of Ministry degrees, specializing in Counseling Christian Leaders. They both also have a Master of Arts in counseling and have completed doctoral work in Marriage and Family therapy, as well as completing an MDiv equivalency.

Prior to joining Marble Retreat full-time, they owned and operated MacKenzie Counseling Services for 8 years where they counseled individuals and couples and specialized in working with those in ministry. They have a great passion to see healing and restoration brought to those in Christian service.

Mike and Kari are the proud parents of two sons, Dylan and Easton.

This webinar will be offered through Zoom, so participants can log in from home to participate. In fact, the BCNM is going to partner with us in promoting this event, so there should be ministers and ministry couples from all over New Mexico who join us. We are extremely blessed to have Dr. MacKenzie meet with us and lead us in what promises to be a tremendously valuable learning experience. The "Don't Blow Up Your Ministry" webinar will be based on Dr. MacKenzie's book by the same name, which was given to all our ministers at the annual meeting this year.

This webinar will be Thursday, February 16th, from 6 to 8 p.m. via Zoom.

There is no cost. However, interested couples are asked to register for the webinar by the the end of Friday, February 10th.

On Monday, February 13th, all couples who have registered will be emailed a link for you to use to join us for the webinar via Zoom. You will also receive a link to an inventory that the MacKenzies are asking participants to complete before the webinar.

Dave and Donna worshiped with FBC in Causey this past Sunday. They attended Sunday school and then the worship service. Pastor John Combs allowed both Dave and Donna to share about the work of Dress A Girl and Tri-Area Association. They were then blessed to hear Pastor John's message on Revelation 21:1-7. After services, the McFaddens took Pastor John and his wife, Jayne, to lunch, where they enjoyed a time of fellowship.

On Monday, Dave traveled to Ft. Sumner for the monthly ministers fellowship there at the Rodeo Grill. Since Dave knew that Tar Henderson and Rick Britain were coming our direction because of a meeting they would be participating in that evening, he invited them to stop off in Ft. Sumner to join the group for lunch, which they did. With a total of nine in attendance, the group had a special time of fellowship together.

On Monday afternoon, Dave and Tar met with Pastor Kevin Dotson of Calvary Baptist in Clovis and some of his leadership to discuss ideas about how to conduct Senior Adult Ministry as a way of doing outreach in the community. They had a very informative meeting.

On Monday evening, Dave, Tar and Rick participated in the first Partnership meeting for Sandia Baptist Church. The meeting was very productive.

The rest of Dave's week was spent making several phone calls by way of doing follow-up from the meeting Monday night at Sandia. He had one-on-one meetings with pastors and did a consultation to help a church with a specific need. Additionally, he spent time working on updating the Tri-Area website and preparing the weekly newsletter. On Wednesday, Dave and Elaine spent time with Kevin Parker, with the BCNM, being trained on using Zoom for the upcoming "Don't Blow Up Your Ministry" webinar on February 16th.
