A new year...
The new year has already been a busy one. I'm completing two more university courses...only one more exam and then I'm taking a break until autumn as my eldest daughter is getting married in the summer. I want to finish up a few things so that I can enjoy our time together beforehand. We'll be travelling to San Francisco and I'm excited to see another beautiful harbour city and all of the arts & culture that comes with that.

I've also begun sharing the watercolour portraits I've been working on. With environmental allergies in our home I've had to make a switch from acrylics. Because of these challenges, the past several months have been a time of change and growth as an artist for me. My self-portrait (on the left) was exhibited at the Federation Gallery in Vancouver in January and I received very positive feedback, which is always a good thing. I wish I could capture the sparkle of the pearl background in a photograph. Here's to more experimentation and growth in the year ahead.

Sparrow Artspace
I'm thrilled to share that the 'Woman's Work' project will be exhibited during my artist residency at Sparrow Artspace in the beautiful, historic deWaal building located in Calgary in June. During the residency I will be creating new work as well as offering a couple of art/travel journalling workshops. As there is limited space and the dates haven't yet been confirmed, I will share an online registration once everything has been verified. Stay tuned!

Those who have known me and my work for some time, are aware that I began my career by painting the furniture that surrounds me. The series was called 'Simple Pleasures' and I created hundreds of those pieces. My paintings were large (3-6 feet) but, due to adhesive capsulitis in both my shoulders I had to reduce the size of my work so I was thrilled when I was approached about creating a small set of interiors. It was so much fun as I haven't dones much of this subject matter in many years.
Woman's Work
This past month & a half I have been working hard on completing the 'Woman's Work' project. All the finaly peices of the 50-piece series have been started, now it's just a matter of placing the finishing touches on them. Coming to the conclusion of a year-long project is always bittersweet. I'm looking forward to experimenting with new work but miss working on a body of work that is so filled with meaning for me. Though I am excitedly looking forward to the exhibition in June.
FREE DRAW

'TWO CANOES'

I recently created two canoes for art demos on 8x10 inch cradled wood panels and would love to gift them to someone. If you would like to be added to the draw, please respond to this email and I will share the recipient next month. Best of luck!

Word-of-the-Year
I began choosing a word to set my intention for the year in 2008 instead of New Years' resolutions as I could never remember (or keep) resolutions. At that time I also began a journal for the year ahead. Having my guiding word on the journal on my nightstand has always been a wonderful reminder. In the journals I write, sketch, make To-Do lists, share gratitude & dreams, scribble...basically whatever I feel like. I begin writing in them on the first day of the year and always make sure to end them on the last. That sometimes means cutting back my writing or adhering something I've cut out of the paper or a magazine that inspires me. Sometimes the word I choose isn't in English, just something that is important to me. It's always fun to look back through these journals at the end of each year.
Federation of Canadian Artists

True North Tarot
The ancestors of what we today know as Tarot cards can be traced back to around the late fourteenth century. Artists in Europe created the first playing cards, which were used for games, and featured four different suits. These suits were similar to what we still use today – staves or wands, discs or coins, cups, and swords. After a decade or two of using these, in the mid-1400s, Italian artists began painting additional cards, heavily illustrated, to add into the existing suits.

These trump, or triumph, cards were often painted for wealthy families. Members of the nobility would commission artists to create for them their own set of cards, featuring family members and friends as the triumph cards. A number of sets, some of which still exist today, were created for the Visconti family of Milan, which counted several dukes and barons among its numbers.

Because not everyone could afford to hire a painter to create a set of cards for them, for a few centuries, customized cards were something only a privileged few could own. It wasn’t until the printing press came along that playing card decks could be mass-produced for the average game-player.

In both France and Italy, the original purpose of Tarot was as a parlor game, not as a divinatory tool. It appears that divination with playing cards started to become popular in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century, although at that time, it was far more simple than the way we use Tarot today.

In 1781, a French Freemason (and former Protestant minister) named Antoine Court de Gebelin published a complex analysis of the Tarot, in which he revealed that the symbolism in the Tarot was in fact derived from the esoteric secrets of Egyptian priests. De Gebelin went on to explain that this ancient occult knowledge had been carried to Rome and revealed to the Catholic Church and the popes, who desperately wanted to keep this arcane knowledge secret. The biggest problem with de Gebelin’s work is that there was really no historical evidence to support it (learningreligions.com).
