Monorails: Market benefits from trend towards megacities
The global trend toward ever larger metropolises is boosting the market for monorails. This is the conclusion of a study conducted by SCI Verkehr, a consulting firm specializing in the rail industry, on behalf of the International Monorail Association (IMA).
According to the study, the monorail market will grow primarily in Asia by 2035. However, there are also interesting prospects in Latin America, North Africa and Europe - especially in Istanbul, London, Moscow and Paris.
Overall, the study goes on to say that an annual market volume of around EUR 2 billion can be expected from 2025 to 2035. This means that monorails will continue to occupy a niche in the transport sector. However, the market is growing comparatively fast. According to the study, the investment volume will probably be distributed as follows: Up to 70% of the money will go into the construction of infrastructure and stations, up to 25% into vehicles and up to 15% into planning.
The length of the global monorail network currently totals 650 km worldwide. According to the SCI study, the 1000 km mark will be exceeded in 2025. The largest new monorail project is currently under construction in Cairo, where a 96 km line is scheduled to open in 2023. This will be followed by a 77 km line in Shantou, China (scheduled to open in 2025) and a 74 km line in Liuzhou, also in the Middle Kingdom (2026). Other monorails are currently being built in Bangkok and Panama City, among other cities.
The study impressively shows that in some places monorails have already become an indispensable part of public transport, says IMA President Marko Kroenke. This is also supported by the fact that 80 monorails are currently in operation worldwide.
According to the study, monorails are also particularly suitable for large cities because the trains can be elevated, thus saving space. In addition, the trains are able to negotiate comparatively tight curves and considerable gradients. Monorails can therefore often be easily and effortlessly integrated into existing infrastructure and architecture. In addition, monorails offer advantages in terms of automation.
