Quarry Wood Local Event
What a day we had last Saturday. Despite a really bad weather forecast the Moravian weather kicked in once again and we had a beautiful sunny morning in Quarry Wood. Thanks to Kaisa, Eian and Ida for three great courses. It was also really good to see Rosie back at the downloads again after her forced sabbatical. Welcome back!

The results and Routegaget are up on the results page of the website, and you can see how to put your route up on this link.

I would personally welcome some feedback on your use of Routegadget for future reference. Do you need any help putting your route up? Do you use it to view your progress round the course without adding your actual route? Do you wonder why anyone would bother with it etc?

Club Awards and Quiz Night
Saturday evening was also a great success. A large number of awards were presented (see above), an amazing spread was produced as usual and a fascinating quiz was produced by Alan. Thanks Alan. And thanks too to Andrew and Liz who organised the whole evening. There are one or two more photos on our club Facebook page.

NB Next year we will be looking for a new quiz presenter. Any volunteers out there?

NNC4 Heathfield Event - important news from Lynne at BASOC
We are currently keeping a close eye on the weather over the next couple of days with regard to the NNC4 at Heathfield on Wednesday 18th January. There has been a little bit of snow in Grantown (quite a bit of it has fallen on icy ground).

Our main concern is travel as the routes many of you are coming along are quite high; for example, there was an accident on the A939 near Dava Station this morning due to the icy nature of the road surface and the A9 at Daviot and over the Slochd does not look great on the live traffic cameras.

We will make a decision about the event by 2pm on Wednesday; you will all be emailed by that time to let you know whether or not it is going ahead. The information will also be on the BASOC website and Facebook page. If we have to postpone it, we will reschedule for Wednesday 1st February and carry your entry forward.

CompassSport Cup and Trophy heat -

Note from Rob - We are still yet to receive entry details for this event - I understand STAG are awaiting final permission from Forest and Land Scotland.  Please keep the date free if you would like to join us in this team event, and look out for the email from me, and postings on the Club Web and Facebook pages as soon as I have heard from the folks at STAG.  We have agreed that as in previous years, the club will pay 100% of Junior entry fees and 50% of Senior entry fees. Qualification for the final will be more of a challenge this year, as ESOC are now in the Trophy (less than 120 BOF members) not the Cup.

Trophy teams: MOR, KFO, MAROC, INVOC, GRAMP, CLYDE, AYROC, TAY, INT, RR, ESOC, ELO, BASOC, STAG
Trophy: The first and second placed Trophy teams qualify for the Final.  Then if MOR, MAROC or INT come first or second then a third team qualifies for the final.

Entry classes will be the same as last year.  For the qualification event club runners who are either BOF & SOA or only SOA members can represent the club. In the final (to be held this year in South West England in November!), everyone must be BOF members.

So, watch this space!

New Main Club League Table for 2023 - note from Eddie
Please note that there will be many events added by clubs through the season, but especially note that many events outside of the north we would expect to be quorate for Moravian, thus any regional standard or above event that has 10 Moravian starters will be included. For example History suggests that the Edinburgh City race later this month will probably be included. Currently there are only 6 Moravian entries. If you are intending to go, all the details are here. EUOC Big Weekend

Coaching Update - note from Morag
Another successful pre-event coaching session was held before the Quarry Wood on Saturday.
Participants re-visited or in some cases were introduced to map symbols and colours, before having a go at a map-walk in groups where training kites had been hung to test skills of recognising control-site features/map symbols. 16 participants signed up and were coached by Nikki, Karen & Morag with help from Peter and Sophie, Scarlett and Finlay, some of our fantastic Young Coaching Assistants in training!
The next Club coaching session will be held for an hour at 09:30 at Gordonstoun School before the event there on Sunday 5th February – please let Morag know (coach@mor.scot) if you would like to attend the coaching and also if you are able to help out if you are a coach or an experienced orienteer!

Also information for our more experienced Junior Orienteers on the Young Coaching Assistance Course run by the SOA:
A course combining theory and practical for juniors with some knowledge of orienteering (TD3 standard ), who are interested in helping with coaching either in a club, squad, camp or school setting. This course is an introduction to aspects of coaching and is in 2 parts: 1.5 hours online (one evening during the week before the practical day)
  • A full practical day (10am - 4pm) on 18th February.
  • You are required to attend both parts to complete the course and then complete 3 sessions in your club to obtain your certificate.
The training is provided free of charge but you will be required to commit to a period of volunteering.
Anyone interested please fill out the registration form which has more information.
