Introducing "Eastlake Parent Voice"

Hello Eastlake Community, Have a great idea? Witnessed something fantastic in the EHS community? Got a helpful tip? We want to hear from parents!  We are introducing a platform to share your voice, experiences and any recommendations that will help other Eastlake students and families. Every week, we will include one submission in the Wolf Tracks newsletter. The entries will be reviewed by a neutral committee to ensure that it is in compliance with the privacy and security guidelines of Eastlake High School and LWSD.  A few ground rules:

  1. Only one entry per week per family
  2. 100 words or less recommended
  3. No complaints or grievances
  4. No hateful comments
  5. No soliciting or sale of products

We will pilot this program until the end of the current school year to understand the effectiveness and helpfulness of the program. We plan to start publishing your voice from February 3rd.  Please submit your entries here. Thank you, EHS PTSA Team

Celebrating Lunar New Year 2023

This year the celebration of the Lunar New Year falls in January and the EHS Library is gearing up for a big display with plenty of books written by or about the culture of China and Chinese authors.   A new biography that will be featured is We Were Dreamers: A Superhero Immigrant Story by Simu Liu. He was the star of the recent Marvel hit movie Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. We are also featuring the memoir Where the Past Begins written by Amy Tan. Watching the documentary Amy Tan: Unintentional Memoir is a wonderful compliment to the book.

The animal for this Lunar New Year is the Rabbit. May everyone have health, wealth, and good fortune in this new year!

Kirkland is having a city-wide celebration. Get more information at https://www.explorekirkland.com/event/lunar-new-year-celebration/398/

Graphic Designer Needed

The PTSA sponsored senior celebration events needs a graphic designer to help create programs, save-the-date, and posters in the late spring.  The role is open to students and adults.  The projects will be relatively straight forward, so no advanced skills are needed.  Graphic design software is required.

Please contact Nikki Balt (nikki@ehsptsa.org) if you are interested.

January Safety Tips of the Month

WINTER DRIVING

The Red Cross encourages everyone to stay off the road during a winter storm if possible. If you must drive in snow or freezing rain, follow these tips:

· Fill the vehicle’s gas tank, and clean the lights and windows to help with visibility.

· Share the details of your route, departure time, and estimated arrival time with someone.

· Don’t follow other vehicles too closely. Sudden stops are difficult on wet roadways.

· Don’t use cruise control when driving in winter weather.

· Avoid distractions such as your cell phone.

· Know that ramps, bridges, and overpasses will freeze before roadways.

· Don’t use electrical components (like your headlights) unless the engine is running.

For students with cars, winter items to store in the car are:

· Warms shoes, clothes, gloves.

· Hand warmers, Mylar blankets or emergency sleeping bag

· Ice scraper/snow brush

· Tire chains

Year-round items for the car are:

· Rain poncho

· Flashlight with extra batteries

· 12-hour emergency light sticks

· Water and emergency food bars

· Flares

· First Aid Kit with bandages and cleansing wipes

· Cellphone charger

· Jumper cables

· Music/games

Important to remember to keep your gas tank at half a tank of gas throughout the winter. The American Red Cross is a great place to start looking into Car Survival Kits for Winter.

Community Service Hours Tracking Info

All EHS students can participate in the Community Service Program, and it’s never too late to begin! Students can log all their community service hours at www.ehs-service.org,  Students with a total of 50 hours or more will be eligible to be featured on the Community service award lists published twice a year in Fall and Spring. Inclusion on this list can be listed as an award on job, college, scholarship, and other applications and seniors can use them in the fall for college apps and spring for graduation. Seniors submitting 200 or more hours by the end of the school year will be eligible for the Honor Chord.

Community Service Spotlight

We are happy to shine our Community Service Spotlight on EHS Sophomore, Praveena Mahendran for her work with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Praveena began her involvement with LLS in 2021 as a candidate for the Student Visionaries of the Year Program, a philanthropic leadership development program for high school students. Tasked with raising thousands of dollars and spreading awareness about blood cancer research, she led a successful fundraising campaign that also involved recruiting and managing a team of volunteers. She discovered that she was passionate about the cause and capable of making an impact on cancer research. Praveena decided to take her involvement with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society a step further and joined their Seattle Ambassadors Program, volunteering as a mentor for new Student Visionaries candidates, directly supporting their fundraising campaigns and outreach. Her dedication and leadership skills recently helped her secure the role of Seattle Ambassador Co-Chair, a position that has her overseeing all LLS Student Ambassadors in the Seattle region.

Praveena believes that getting involved with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society was one of the best decisions she has ever made.  “I truly feel like I’ve found my place in LLS. I’ve gotten to work and connect with some of the most amazing people, and I am happy to advocate and support an organization with a mission that I’ve always had a passion for.”

Learn more about The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and how to support their efforts to fund lifesaving research.

Thank you, Praveena, for all your hard work on behalf of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Do you know an Eastlake student who is serving the community in a thoughtful way? We would love to highlight their efforts in the Wolf Tracks newsletter. Teachers, parents, peers, and community members can let us know how students are helping others by nominating them.
