Good Morning Teachers,

As you consider booking an upcoming School Learning Expedition, remember Jurupa Mountains Discovery Center is more than just Rock Collecting at the Dinosaurs. We offer a wide variety of School Learning Expeditions that complement both science and social science curriculum. One often overlooked, fun, a little messy, and educational School Learning Expedition is our Adventures in Adobe. This is a School Learning Expedition that offers Student Explorers the opportunity to immerse themselves in the adobe-making process while discovering the many ways adobe has played a role in California history. One noteworthy aspect of Adventures in Adobe is that this expedition can be tailored to complement a variety of classroom curriculums. If you choose to book an Adventures in Adobe School Learning Expedition, here is what you can expect for your Student Explorers.

If you are a Kindergarten or 1st-grade teacher, your Student Explorers will discover that in many ways life in the United States long ago was very different from our life today, however, in some ways it was the same. For example, long ago, children living in California would have eaten different foods; played different games; and had different chores. Even houses long ago were different than our houses today. As a way to demonstrate this concept, Explorers will discover the importance of working together as they make adobe, an important building material from days past, using their feet. They will use their adobe to create a brick of their own.
The focus of Adventures in Adobe for 3rd grade Student Explorers will center around the life of the California Native American and some of the ways the life of the Native American changed as more and more settlers moved into California. Your 3rd grade Student Explorers will conclude their Adventures in Adobe Expedition by stomping in the mud as they experience the adobe brick-making process.
Student Explorers in 4th grade will also participate in adobe brick making, but their Adventures in Adobe experience will have a different focus. Student Explorers in this grade level will discover facts about the California Missions, and explore ways the natural environment played an important role in the type of houses that were built long ago.

For those who have never participated in the Adventures in Adobe experience, consider
booking it for your next Student Learning Expedition. It is a fun, a little messy, and an excellent way to reinforce California history classroom curriculum.

Currently, JMDC has a closed campus Monday – Friday for School Learning Expeditions.  When you are ready to book your School Learning Expedition, call the JMDC office at (951) 685-5818.  One of our friendly staff will happily take your reservation.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.
