RA among first recipients of LAF Ignite scholarship
Ezra Lewis, an RA in Reed Community was one of four students selected for the inaugural cohort of the Landscape Architecture Foundation’s Ignite program. Following the fall 2022 semester, 38 of University Housing’s C.L.A.S.S. advocates (CAs) and resident assistants (RAs) have earned a 4.0 GPA. This achievement is an amazing feat considering these student staff members also play an integral role in the department’s residential curriculum focused on community building, interpersonal skills, social awareness and responsibility, and well-being.
In addition to these amazing students, University Housing boasts six student staff members selected as 2023 Orientation Leaders. These six students had to demonstrate intelligence and empathy as well as an outstanding commitment to the University of Georgia to be chosen to represent UGA at new student orientation events throughout the year. Congratulations!

Jenny Belle Myers (to the right of the tailgate in the black coat) and the "Jenny Bell." For years the bell sat on a plaza outside a basement snack bar and school supply shop on the Cedar Drive side of Myers Hall. When the shop was eliminated, the bell was moved to the entry of Snelling Dining Commons.
Before Myers opened, undergraduate coeds spent their first two years living and learning on the Coordinate Campus, a large operation that occupied the old State Normal School—today the UGA Health Sciences Campus. I remember reading somewhere that when this arrangement was developed in 1932 it was to keep young coeds away, not from boys, but from the nefarious lip sticked, cocktail drinking, cigarette smoking junior and senior women. With the transfer of the kid coeds to Myers the campus was sold to the U.S. Navy as the Supply Corps School in 1954.
Start the year off with Mentorship in mind by Lily Fleenor
January is Mentoring Month, just in time for the beginning of a new year! New beginnings mean new opportunities, and becoming a mentor is a great way to support UGA students as the semester begins.
In honor of International Mentoring Day on January 17th, we spoke with UGA mentee and UGA Mentor Program Ambassador Moira La Fuente (Class of 2024) and her UGA mentor Melissa Adomako (BS ’13) about their experience in the program and why they believe others can benefit too.
