Survey on LTER scientists' attitudes toward public engagement

The Advancing Public Engagement Across LTERs (APEAL) Project is working to understand how LTER researchers think about public engagement with science. The results of the survey, conducted by John Besley and colleagues, will be used to help sites improve their engagement efforts and for academic research. Results from previous work at Harvard Forest and Hubbard Brook have been shared and discussed at several LTER meetings and the current survey expands this work.

The community of LTER researchers is relatively small, so broad participation is needed to ensure data quality. Graduate students are welcome to participate! The survey should take about 15 minutes.

DEIA Resource of the Month

Championing inclusive terminology in ecology and evolution

Amid a growing disciplinary commitment to inclusion in ecology and evolutionary biology (EEB), it is critical to consider how the use of scientific language can harm members of our research community. In this paper, the authors outline a path for identifying and revising harmful terminology to foster inclusion in EEB. The author list includes several LTER researchers and many friends of the network. Read the paper>>

DEIA Resource of the month is brought to you by the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice Committee. Contact Committee chairs Nameer Baker (nameerbaker@gmail.com) or Mariah Patton (mtpatton@umn.edu) for additional information.

Swamp Eels Wreak Havoc on Small Species at the Florida Coastal Everglades LTER
by Gabriel De La Rosa

Since its introduction into Taylor Slough in 2009, the swamp eel has nearly eliminated several populations of small aquatic species in the Everglades watershed. The new invasive may be more disruptive to the Everglades than the park’s flagship invasive, the Burmese Python, and brings a new challenge to Everglades management and restoration. Read more>>

Wow, what a beautiful elementary school activity designed by KBS RET Gabe Knowles! It's LTER science, mixed with artistic flair, all for education—we love it!

And it's peak field season for our southern hemisphere sites, with the Palmer LTER crew taking advantage of summer weather to complete their annual cruise. I don't know if we'd miss being seasick like Kayla, but with snow in the hills and more rain in the Santa Barbara forecast, summer sure sounds nice for the LNO crew!
