Meet the 2023 SchoolHouse Connection Scholars!

It is time to welcome a new class of scholars to the SchoolHouse Connection family! Last year, we received hundreds of applications from students all across the country. Our selection committee, composed of local and state educators, counselors, and young people with lived experience, was faced with very difficult decisions to select only ten scholars. Our 2023 scholars demonstrated dedication to their education, perseverance in overcoming barriers, and passion for higher education. We can’t wait to see what they accomplish as they pursue higher education and beyond!

Young Leaders in the News
I was 17, homeless, and alone. Here’s how my school helped me back on my feet.
(This story was originally published by Chalkbeat.)

"My own unstable housing, along with other stressors, meant I had missed nearly two months of school. Almost forced to drop out, I managed to re-enroll at a school near where I was staying. That’s how I met Sabra Emde, Ardmore High School’s McKinney-Vento liaison. Sabra’s job is to make sure students experiencing homelessness have access to education and support."

We are proud to recognize Carlos, a SchoolHouse Connection Scholar, who shared his story to shed light on the challenges faced by homeless students. We also extend our gratitude to McKinney-Vento liaisons like Sabra, and graduation mentors like Keri, who play a critical role in improving the lives of students experiencing homelessness.
