One of the musical genres I like to both participate in and listen to in concert is a Capella singing. While in seminary, I had the opportunity to go and see the group, aptly named, “A Capella” in concert. Amid the many blessings of that time was a song that has stuck with me through the years called, “Speaking the Truth in Love.” This Sunday’s lectionary passage from the Gospel of Matthew, does something interesting that sets the stage for this kind of perspective on an otherwise difficult set of teachings from the Sermon on the Mount.

Speaking the truth in love and telling it like it is, is both one of the gifts and challenges of faithful followers. Sometimes we are led to speak words of comfort and at other times we are led to point out tendencies in our human natures that fall short. Yet in all things, if we are speaking the truth in love, it is because love is leading us … or should I say Love is leading us? I pray you have found ways to let Love lead the way in you…and ultimately, I pray that Love leads the way forward for all of us.

I look forward to seeing you in worship at 1st Pres this weekend!

Sincerely,
Pastor Scott

February Challenge Offering:

Friendship with Cambodia

Read more about Friendship with Cambodia in this Sunday's Minute for Mission presentation.

A note from Bhavia Wagner regarding Friendship with Cambodia’s humanitarian efforts:

You are helping a university student studying dentistry.  Sovanrak's parents died from AIDS and he grew up in an orphanage. He is a very caring young man who now teaches all the children at the orphanage dental hygiene. He volunteers for our program that helps destitute elders who have no family to care for them. He delivers medicine to them and he drives the farm equipment on their land so they have enough rice to eat for the year.

Our other programs include supporting over 500 poor rural women in Self-Help Groups for economic empowerment, supporting a shelter for girls and women who were sex-trafficked or survivors of rape or domestic violence, and support for a rural hospital. This year, we are helping 37 students to attend university. They will break the cycle of poverty in their families.

We greatly appreciate your support!

Church Family Celebrations:

Our longtime organ tuner, Lanny Hochhalter, is retiring this year. We thank him for decades of skilled service. He and our new organ tuner, Richard Uskovits, will visit our Sanctuary together to tune our organ before the Easter service.

A note from the Lanny & Judy Hochhalter:

"After 42 years of full-time pipe organ work, now it is time to retire and let the next generation take over. We've maintained your pipe organ for about 41 of those years!

It is overwhelming to think of our many clients through the years that entrusted us with their very valuable instruments. Along the way there have been many who helped us get started and sustain our business, we will not forget!

I am pleased to announce that, starting in March, Richard Uskovits has agreed to be our replacement. We think you will find him very qualified! Taking over the service of our 60+ regular clients will require a bit of a learning curve as many instruments have secret hatches, hidden ladders and fussy reed pipes. We will share with him your instrument's service history, quirks, and future maintenance needs. We will accompany him for the pre-Easter tunings. We will do our best to help him get acquainted with your instrument.

It has been a great pleasure to have served First Presbyterian all these years!
"

Church Family Prayer Requests:

For the many people affected by the two major earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, the bereaved, the injured and the rescue workers.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance

“God is our refuge and strength … though the mountains shake.” - Psalm 46:1-3

The scale of the disaster facing Syria and Turkey after the Feb. 6 earthquake is becoming clearer. The 7.8-magnitude quake and its aftershocks have left more than 11,000 people dead and thousands more injured; these numbers will rise as search and rescue continues. Buildings have been reduced to rubble, and roads and bridges have been severely damaged, resulting in dangerous conditions for first responders. In some places, such as Aleppo, this destruction is compounding the damage of the now 11-year war in Syria.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is providing emergency relief and short-term recovery in the impacted areas through long-standing partners in Syria, in addition to ACT Alliance members in Syria and Turkey, all of whom are already on the ground. PDA will remain active throughout the entire recovery process, accompanying our partners in the area as they determine long-term program needs and providing financial support for building and resilience.
