Hey New Techies,

I'm excited to share that New Tech Northwest is launching a new virtual meetup series for the ADHD & Neurodiverse Community.

Twice a month, on first and third Tuesdays you can spend an hour safely and freely discuss your neurodiverse experiences with a supportive community of peers. Join us for our first virtual meetup on February 21st where we will be discussing imposter syndrome.

In the last year I've had conversations with about 150 ADHDers and almost all of them ended with the person saying "I've never had a conversation like this and I have no one to talk to." Well, now you do.

Now you can create community by attending as many of these bi-weekly events as you like whenever you like. These conversations have been invaluable for me, members of my ADHD groups, and the ADHDers I've spoken with so I'm grateful to build community together in service to our mental health and our relationships (personal and professional).

February commemorates Black History, honoring those who have contributed to advancing our country’s society. This article shares some ideas for the tech community to commemorate Black Americans and improve diversity and inclusion practices. I encourage you to give it a read.

Please also visit our Racial Justice resource page to discover resources for celebrating and supporting the Black community if you're not BIPOC yourself. In the aftermath of Tyre Nichols' murder being the latest killing from systemic racism, we all need to do our part in fighting racism and building an equitable society.

Layoffs have been making headlines recently and research finds that women are disproportionately more affected than men. Check out this interesting article from Geekwire citing the research and considerations on DEI efforts in the tech space.

Finally, don’t forget, the next New Tech Seattle Meetup is on Thursday. Register now! You don’t want to miss our lineup of speakers talking about women in STEM, streamlined QA for mission-critical microelectronics and AI powered global hiring.

Be well and  create joy,

New Presenter Alumni Spotlight: Trent Gillespie, Day One Innovation

Each week in the New Tech Newsletter we feature a Spotlight Q&A with founders, angels, New Tech alumni presenters, and other people or companies in our community we believe you’d like to learn about. Reach out if you'd like to recommend a startup, founder, angel, accelerator, or New Tech alumni presenter for us to spotlight for the PNW tech community!

In this week’s spotlight we caught up with Trent Gillespie, Founder and Chief Innovation Officer of Day One Innovation.

Why do you do what you do for a living?
I help people and organizations improve how they innovate because I enjoy helping others create awesome solutions for difficult problems. Also, I consider sustainability a key part of innovation, so the more I can help people innovate sustainably, the more positive impact I can have in the world!

Why did you start your company?
While managing Amazon’s global expansion, or ensuring Alexa was doing the right things with customer data, I was able to see first-hand the benefits and risks technology and innovation can bring to the world. When Covid happened, I decided it was time to quit Amazon and see how I could use that experience and my technical background to help others.

What I realized is that innovation, although often misunderstood, is actually the primary point of business, and even what most people strive for in their careers. So starting a business that focused on this would provide the largest potential impact, best use my skills and experience, and of course give me the flexibility to control my own schedule and live life the way I want.
