How does a League Candidate Forum Work?
The League provides candidate forums for contested races only. All League candidate forums are impartially moderated by trained, non-partisan volunteers. Each candidate is given two minutes to present their opening statement. Lots are drawn prior to the forum to determine the order.
Questions are solicited in advance from League members, community members, and non-partisan groups. For in-person forums, the audience is given notecards for them to write questions during the course of the event. Questions are reviewed by the League for appropriateness, relevance, and redundancy. The moderator asks questions in rotation so that each candidate has equal opportunities to be the first to answer. Equal time is given to all candidates to answer each question. After the allotted time for questions is met, each candidate is given one minute to share their closing statement.
If only one candidate for a contested race is present, they will be limited to a three-minute statement of introduction. No surrogates are permitted to participate.
