BUCS XC Win for Josh, Ben takes Northern Gold, Niamh Earns ESAA call-up

It was a fantastic weekend for Team Blyth’s young chargers – with standout performances across the UK. Josh Fiddaman took a sensational victory in the British Universities (BUCS) XC Championships at Pembrey Country Park. In a field of hundreds, Josh stormed a landmark victory. Also on Saturday, Niamh took part in the Intercounties XC, representing Northumberland. Niamh finished 24th overall and was 6th for Northumberland. After a nervous wait, on Monday evening Niamh recieved the exciting news that she has been selected to represent her county at the English Schools Cross-Country Championships - a fantastic and well-deserved achievement.

On Sunday, 4 athletes travelled to Sheffield for the Northern U13/U15 indoor Championships. Isla Bell was faced with a scheduling conflict, with her 200m heat coinciding with the high jump. She made superb early clearances in the high jump, achieving 1.35m before a quick change of spikes and over to the 200m start line. She ran a fantastic race to finish 3rd in her heat in a time of 28.29s, a PB by over a second. After heading immediately back to high jump, the bar was at 1.40, beyond Isla’s PB. Sadly the 200m had taken just a little too much out of her legs to be able to jump effectively, and it was a 9th place finish. Caitlin Creaby also ran in the 200m, and produced a committed run, against girls a year older than her. Her time of 28.73 was a massive personal best, which she backed up in her 60m heat with another PB of 8.86s

Hollie-Anne completed a trio of Blyth girls in the U15 200m, and she made superb progression from the heat with a victory in 27.29s. In the semi-final, she shaved 0.01 off her heat time to finish 2nd and qualify for the final which was a superb achievement. In the final, Hollie gave it her all from the tricky lane 1 and secured a 6th place finish at her first final at this level. Ben was our only boy in action, and he had an amazing debut championship. He took a brilliant gold in the U13 shot put, launching the 3kg shot out to a huge new PB of 7.46m. Later on, Ben progressed through to the 60m final, where he was involved in a thrilling race, with Ben securing an excellent bronze after a photo finish.
