UF Celebrates Black History Month

The University of Florida is celebrating Black History Month by recognizing the achievements of African-Americans and their families, and the role they have played in shaping our country — and more specifically, our university.

Throughout the month of February, the university will highlight the Black experience at UF through events, campus initiatives and inspiring stories. UF encourages you to visit our website dedicated to our latest features, and share with us your thoughts on the Black experience at UF by using the hashtag #BlackHistoryMonth and tagging @UF.

UF Postdoc Association Monthly Socials are on the Last Thursday of Each Month

IMPORTANT UPDATE: UFPDA monthly socials hosted at Depot Park will now be scheduled for the Last Thursday each month starting in February. 
 
UFPDA is organizing a social gathering at Depot Park near Humblewood Fire Pizza Trailer (127 SE Depot Ave) on Thursday, February 23rd starting at 6:00pm.
 
It's the perfect opportunity to unwind, plan for the weekend, and meet new postdocs or catch up with friends. Depot Park (and UFPDA) is pet and family friendly, so feel free to bring them along.
 
Look out for the UFPDA Banner. If you have trouble finding the group or need directions, please reach out on the Florida Postdoc Socials WhatsApp group.

Student Interns are Available for Your Summer and Fall Research Projects

The Active Learning Program provides teams of 2-6 trained undergraduate student interns to UF researchers for research projects. We recruit student interns for your specific project.  

Over the last 5 years, the ALP has provided over 700 student interns to UF researchers involved in 150 different projects.  

To receive interns for the Spring 2023 semester, please fill out this short form.

Free Subscriptions to Wellness Apps, Noom & Calm

The University of Florida is offering faculty and staff free subscriptions to Noom and Calm, two apps designed to support your wellness and personal goals.
 
A psychology-based program that empowers you to take care of your health, Noom has helped millions of people lose weight and meet their personal goals — from weight management to diabetes prevention to stress reduction. Subscriptions are available for the first 2,500 faculty and staff who sign up for Noom.
 
Calm is a mindfulness app that features pre-recorded audio content designed to help manage stress, anxiety and insomnia. Subscriptions are available for the first 5,000 faculty and staff, with each subscription covering up to five dependents.

Finding the Funds: NIH NIGMS Funding and Training Opportunities - Feb. 8th

The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology’s public affairs department is hosting a webinar alongside NIH’s National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) on funding opportunities, on Wednesday, February 8, from 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Tune in to hear about NIGMS' mission, divisions and funding priorities. Introduction to the Science of Team Science - Learn Discover Lead Seminar Feb. 10th

The Conversation with The Conversation: Increasing the Public Impact of your Writing & Research - Feb. 10th

Join the Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere on February 10 @ 10 AM in the Scott Nygren Studio for a Workshop with Martin LaMonica (Director, Editorial Projects and Newsletters for The Conversation) on increasing the public impact of your writing and research. Over the past eight years, nearly 300 University of Florida faculty and graduate students have written over 400 articles for The Conversation, a non-profit news service that helps academics share their expertise with the general public. Rochester Institute of Technology Future Faculty Career Exploration Program - Apply by Feb. 28th

Started in 2003, the Future Faculty Career Exploration Program is a rigorous four-day program designed for African American, Latino American, and Native American scholars and artists to experience a “behind the scenes” glimpse into life as a faculty member at RIT. Participants spend time learning from and networking with RIT administration, faculty, and students, practicing interview skills and job-talk presentations—while exploring the research, teaching and service expectations of RIT faculty.

This competitive, nationwide search welcomes scholars from all disciplines offered at RIT. We encourage you to explore our colleges and departments to see how your research or artistic endeavors best fit into RIT. If chosen to participate, RIT will cover your transportation, lodging, and meals for the duration of the program.

Make it Global: Curriculum Internationalization

During this workshop, faculty will learn how to enhance their courses with international case studies, activities, and perspectives. This workshop will also expose instructors to best practices such as international virtual exchange and useful frameworks (i.e., the UN Sustainable Development Goals) that can be used to infuse international concepts and activities into any discipline. The session will provide an overview of relevant data on the attitudes and beliefs of UF students towards global issues and intercultural communication that instructors can use to fine tune their teaching, and participants will also receive a self-assessment tool to measure the internationalization of their current courses.

A Public Forum of the Nelson Initiative on Ethics and Leadership - Feb. 17th

The George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida cordially invites you to attend an event with NASA Administrator and former Senator Bill Nelson with former astronauts at the Smathers Library on Friday, February 17th, from 2-4:30 p.m. 
 
Senator Nelson has deposited a collection of papers and other historical materials with the George A. Smathers Libraries, establishing a significant collection spanning his multi-decade career in public service. This is the sixth program of the Nelson Initiative on Ethics and Leadership at the University of Florida.

UF Compliance and Ethics launches Compliance Learn over Lunch Program - First Session Feb. 28th

In February, UF Compliance and Ethics (UFCE) launches a new Learn over Lunch webinar program open to all University of Florida (UF) staff and faculty. At least once per quarter, UFCE will host a 50-minute webinar featuring one or more offices with key compliance responsibilities for UF. Speakers will describe their offices’ efforts as well as the attendees’ role in this compliance work.
 
The first UFCE Learn over Lunch will focus on UF’s Antifraud Framework (a collaboration between the Chief Financial Officer’s office, the Office of Internal Audit and UFCE).The Antifraud Framework both provides the principles and structural elements UF uses to address fraud, waste, abuse, and financial mismanagement and outlines the actions and processes UF uses to prevent and detect fraud. This webinar will take place over zoom on February 28 from 12 – 12:50pm. You can reserve your space for this webinar at the following link: Register for Anti-Fraud Webinar.
