A word from our Director
This month's newsletter brings more reasons, opportunities, and encouragement to get involved with the Academy of Educators. Many programs (TSP, PD Bootcamp), workshops (Saying No, Email Management, Promotions for Educators), and grants (Small Grants and Loeb) are accepting applications. Drs. Emke and Hagemann each offer their firsthand insight as to how the Loeb Fellowship enhanced their work and careers. We celebrate Dr. Sara Greer's success through Small Grants funding. Our Winter Outing was attended by many members with some fun activities organized by our new engagement committee; we hope to see more of you at future events. And speaking of future events, we could not be more excited that our February Academy of Educators member meeting will be in person! Please join us IN PERSON February 28th from 3 - 4pm when we welcome Dr. Renee Shellhaas, Associate Dean for Faculty Promotions and Career Development to talk to us about her new role and how we can best engage with her office to support educator career development. One thing you'll learn, mentorship is key! Special thanks to our mentorship committee who will be sharing exciting updates on the evolving AoE educator mentoring program! Big shout out to all of our AoE committees who are working hard to help us move our mission and goals forward! As a service Academy, we are only as strong as the work, passion, ideas, and efforts of each of you! Thank you! While we have a lot going on, we always welcome new ideas and are eager to hear from you! Lastly, huge congrats to all of our educators and educational leaders involved in the February LCME visit. We have so much to be thankful for and proud of! It was an honor to represent the Academy to our visitors. -  Abby (Abby Spencer, MD, MS)

Love most about teaching / education / mentoring: contributing to and witnessing the “ah ha” moment with learners.

I see it daily in the educational and clinical activities of my students, patients and colleagues as they manage life’s “knock downs” and they rise to the occasion picking themselves up to achieve their goals and aspirations.
Career Accomplishment that you are most proud of: I am most proud of my college degrees as I am the first college graduate in my family.
A fun fact: I have travelled to Mekelle Ethiopia twice to help advance education and practice for physical therapists in Ethiopia.

After Hours

What is your passion outside of work?

I love my family. I love travel, including hiking in our beautiful national parks and visiting our granddaughter. I really enjoy quiet time, including practicing yoga and meditation, and walking and jogging with our dog.  Many know that I am a big fan of all kinds of music, from classic rock to rap to opera.

Loeb Teaching Fellows Applications Due March 10th

On behalf of Loeb Selection Committee co-chairs, Dr. Eva Aagaard and Dr. Abby Spencer, we are pleased to announce the call for applications for Loeb Teaching Fellows. Applications will be accepted beginning January 30th and are due Friday, March 10, 2023 at 5:00pm.

The Loeb Teaching Fellows program was established in 2004 by a generous gift from Mr. and Mrs. Loeb to support faculty who are committed to excellence and innovation in teaching and education. The program provides fellows with the time and opportunity to develop and implement innovative ideas that augment the education of medical students, residents and fellows. All Washington University School of Medicine faculty (including volunteer faculty) at any level are eligible to apply. These prestigious fellowships are the cornerstone of our innovation in education efforts and are critical to helping WUSM grow as a world-class center for educational excellence.

There will be two (2) Loeb Teaching Fellowships available this term, supported jointly by the BJH Foundation and WUSM; the Fellowship term will run two years, beginning July 1, 2023 and ending June 30, 2025. A mid-term review and renewal is required in 2024. Loeb Teaching Fellows will receive $50,000 per year for two years for salary compensation only to enable dedicating a significant portion of his/her time to development and implementation of their project and direct teaching of medical students, residents, or fellows.

For additional information on the Loeb Teaching Fellows, including a list of current and past fellows and the 2023 selection committee, please visit the Academy of Educators website. The application can be found here

The Loeb Impact
Receiving the Loeb Fellowship was truly instrumental in launching my leadership career in medical education. I was afforded the opportunity, through the salary support I received that allowed me to decrease my clinical time, to pursue not only the research directly related to my project but also immerse myself in the science of health education through the Master of Health Professions Education program. This work and the experience and knowledge gained provided me additional opportunities to apply those gifts to other educational leadership endeavors. I am forever grateful to the generosity of Carol and Jerome Loeb for opening a door that has led me to find my passion and reach my dreams.”
Amanda Emke, ’15-’17 Loeb Fellow

Beyond providing support for education projects, the Loeb Fellows program is an investment in the future of medical education at our institution and its impact will be felt for decades to come. Being a Loeb Fellow has been the greatest honor of my time as a faculty member!
Ian Hagemann ’20-’22 Loeb Fellow

In Our Words: Connection, A Storytelling Event

Bernard Becker Library and the SOM Office of Education are hosting a storytelling event. Medical students, residents, fellows, faculty, and staff are invited to this in-person event to hear stories of growth, insight, bravery, wisdom, and vulnerability. This event aims to build community and connection among physician trainees, faculty and staff.

Storytelling normalizes experiences and makes us all feel a little less alone. It can improve overall well-being and reduce the burnout that many experience. Friends and family are welcome. This event will be held at Third Degree Glass Factory.
More information and stories can be submitted here.

Teaching Pearl

Most presentations in medical school have a very limited amount of time allocated to present a very large amount of information. It is reasonable that students have questions, but questions can disrupt the flow of a presentation and may on occasion bring the presentation to a premature end. Most presentations in Gateway have a PowerPoint or PDF of the PowerPoint that students use for notes. I have found it useful to insert a slide with a very large red and cartoonish question mark at various logical break points where I plan to devote some time to answering questions. There may be a couple to several of these flags depending on the complexity of the material or number of subject areas.  The question marks are so large that they can be seen at a glance when the file is first opened. It seems to provide students with some reassurance that questions will be answered and serves as a guide to where specific questions may be most appropriate. It has made a difference.
