A Twist on Local Black History
This barber pole presents a bit of a “history mystery” for us at SOHS. Originally identified simply as “Found in Collections” in 1988, staff later determined that this pole was actually one-in-the-same with SOHS #4381, a piece from the Society’s earliest founding collections. If this is indeed SOHS #4381, then it represents a significant piece of local Black history: it is the barber’s pole that once stood outside of Elite Barbershop on Main Street in Jacksonville, where Black barber Charles Blockwell made a living from the 1860s-1870s. Blockwell’s business partner was Samuel Vose, another Black Jacksonville resident who ran an adjacent shoe shine business. Research into Blockwell and Vose’s stories is ongoing.
