Welcome back: Winter at Edible Campus
Edible Campus UNC is a program of the North Carolina Botanical Garden that creates working landscapes across UNC-Chapel Hill to facilitate campus community engagement in topics of food and agriculture sustainability.

Overwintering at Edible Campus

Our plants experience cold conditions over the winter. To combat this, Edible Campus uses metal hoops, bamboo, and row covers to keep the plants safe when temperatures drop below 25F. This makes it possible for our crops to overwinter, or endure the winter.

Help us save the pollinators!

As part of a campaign by the Chicago Botanical Garden, North Carolina Botanical Garden is participating in a call to action to save pollinators by using an app called Budburst. Anyone can participate by downloading the app and observing how many pollinators - including various types of bees and wasps, hummingbirds, and butterflies - visit a specific plant. By downloading the app and recording this data, you will help in the effort to compile data to better understand the impact of climate change on plant growing seasons and pollinator interactions. Learn more on the NCBG website.

More information and detailed instructions will be coming to our kiosk at the Edible Campus Main Garden behind Davis soon.

Workday Updates

The last few workdays have been all about cleaning up from the cold our gardens have sustained over break! Our team and wonderful volunteers have cleaned up all of our beds and started planting new seeds to replace the plants we lost to the cold. In all, we’ve started planting seeds in the main garden and distributed 17 flat beds worth of seeds in our satellite garden!

 Want to join a workday?

Our workdays this semester alternate Mondays and Thursdays each week from 3:00-5:00 pm @ the Edible Campus Main Garden behind Davis Library.  Follow this link to sign up and prepare to get your hands (or garden gloves) dirty! Stay up to date with what we are working on and receive updates about workdays by following our Instagram and Facebook.

Tea Feature: Restorative Rosemary

Need a pick-me-up in this sometimes cold North Carolina weather? Try a restorative rosemary tea from our very own Edible Campus gardens. All you have to do is pluck some rosemary from the Graham, Stacy, or Lenoir gardens and toss it in some boiling water. Rosemary is known for reducing gas and bloating and promoting healthy gut bacteria. When the warmer months of April and May come around, try blending some lavender into the mix - also from our gardens.
Upcoming Events at the North Carolina Botanical Garden

March 23, 2023 - 12-1PM: Hybrid Lunchbox Talk: Supporting Pollinator Communities in NC Agroecosystems with Hannah Levenson, Postdoctoral Research Scholar, NCSU Dept. of Entomology and Plant Pathology

Free; $5 suggested fee; preregistration required

Pollinating insects, primarily bees, provide billions of dollars worth of pollination services to agricultural systems across the US each year. However, populations of these important insects are jeopardized by a multitude of stressors including habitat loss, land development, pathogens, pesticides, and climate change. There have been many conservation efforts towards protecting pollinator communities in agricultural areas, but questions remain about how best to do so. Learn about examples of conservation efforts in North Carolina and how the pollinator community responds.

This program will be delivered in a hybrid format.
  • In-person option: Seats are available in the Reeves Auditorium. Please register all members of your party separately to ensure we have enough seats.
  • Virtual option: We will stream the lecture live via Zoom Webinar. Links for accessing the program will be emailed to registered participants in advance of the program.

Compost

Did you know Edible Campus accepts compost donations at the Main Garden behind Davis Library? Your food waste will be converted into usable compost for our Main Garden and satellite beds once it is finished curing. Be sure to deposit your food waste in the active bin!
Not sure what you can compost? Here is a good article about composting.

Interested in helping us rotate the compost? Contact Kyle Parker at kparker@unc.edu for more information.
