The Emirates Arena in Glasgow greeted 5 Team Blyth juniors, as they took part in the Scottish National Combined Events Championships over the weekend. On Saturday, 10-year old India Gorvett made her pentathlon debut in the U13 age group, starting in fine style with a high jump PB. However drama followed in the hurdles. After a great start, India’s progress was halted when the athlete in the next lane fell into India’s path, causing her to fall over the next hurdle and destroying her race. After discussions with the officials, they offered India the chance to race again – solo. In front of an audience of 1000 spectators, India has no hestitation and agreed to run again with the eyes of the stadium on her. She ran a huge new personal best! The long jump followed and there was another PB for India putting her in an amazing 6th place. The shot put didn’t go quite so well, and India finished off with a superbly paced 800m to secure a top-10 finish on debut.

On Sunday, Sadie, Senna (U17) Isla and Caitlin (U15) entered the fray. Sadie started with a huge shot put PB, with Senna close to her best, whilst Isla and Caitlin both set PB’s in the high jump. In the hurdles, there was heartbreak for Isla as she lost rhythm after a superb start and stopped before hurdle 3. She did complete the race though. Sadie, Caitlin and Senna all set hurdles PB’s. In the long jump, Sadie and Senna both produced very solid performances to set themselves up superbly, whilst Isla and Caitlin leaped to massive long jump personal bests. In the high jump, Sadie and Senna both cleared an excellent 1.51m, whilst Caitlin and Isla continued their amazing progress with huge shot put PB’s. The 800m closed the day. Isla finished her comp with a huge 800m PB and a 20th place finish despite losing 600+ points in hurdles. Caitlin went out hard in her 800m, but didn’t quite get pacing right. She finished in 15th overall. Senna ran a well paced 800m, and secured a 12th place finish in her first year in age group. Sadie went in the final 800m heat, with Sadie sat in joint 2nd place, just 10 pts from the lead. She knew what she needed to do and ran a perfectly executed race to take 1st place in the race, in a new PB, and secure the Scottish National Title with 3318pts.
