Kia ora <<First Name>>,

Welcome to 2023's first edition of impact investing news in Aotearoa New Zealand and globally.

There really is only one topic in the hearts and minds of all our nation right now: Cyclone. One word but affecting so many regions and people.

Despite the devastation we have seen incredible acts of generosity, bravery and resourcefulness. Providing us with optimism, to unite as a nation, in supporting the recovery of those most affected homes and communities. And ideally the opportunity to ‘build forward’, strengthening the resilience of our communities and economy in the face of future climate change impacts.

Like any mammoth challenge we just need to start. And have a plan. The plan will require leadership, partnership and innovation. And the courage to make tough decisions about managed retreat from unviable and uninsurable locations.

Implementing the plan will require mammoth amounts of investment. Further compounding existing infrastructure spending deficit and affordability challenges across central and local government.

We need a coordinated response across the government, investment and philanthropic sectors to fund and finance both the immediate and longer-term response. And an integration of climate mitigation and adaptation goals with investment decisions into housing, infrastructure, transport, and energy.

Impact investing can be part of the solution to build a more resilient and equitable Aotearoa New Zealand.

Cyclone Gabrielle has been a loud and clear wake-up call. Our response must be a call to action. Over the coming months, the IIN team and Board will explore with other players in the investment sector and other stakeholders initiatives that can contribute to the build effort - including the scope for blended finance structures to enable private sector investment where appropriate.

If you have ideas and like to be involved please contact with our IIN Manager, Tan Huynh.
