How to work with young people in Citizen Science Apps? - Complying with privacy laws and parental consent requirements

Participants in citizen science are often younger than the national age of legal capacity and need parental or guardian consent to join a project. Together with their consortium partners in the Horizon 2020 project "YouCount," the SPOTTERON app platform has developed a comprehensive system to enable digital-parental consent for young people in citizen science apps. The new feature is automatically available for all projects on the platform and brings better legal and ethical compliance to your CS apps.

Earthwatch Europe has launched the new FreshWater Watch platform and newsletter
The platform and newsletter aim to increase the usability and impact of its impressive global citizen science dataset and community network.

The new Esri FreshWater Watch platform has improved the visualisation of its open-access 34,646+ global citizen science water quality measurements. On its “Dive deeper” map and graphs, results can be filtered according to the water quality proxy of interest, community group, project or date, and downloaded by csv. file. These upgrades will hopefully increase the access, functionality and usability of this unique dataset. Additionly, the first online newsletter has been published featuring content provided by FreshWater Watch community groups and Earthwatch Europe, with FreshWater Watch encouraging submissions from all stakeholders who engage with the programme.

CSI-COP project won theBest Innovative Privacy Project’ category in the inaugural Piccaso Privacy awards held in the Grosvenor House Ballroom, Park Lane, London on 8 December 2022. This win is important because CSI-COP were recognised against well-established organisations working in data-privacy, including the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), PwC, Nokia, the Cabinet Office (a UK government department), and King (makers of Candy Crush game).

CSI-COP held their Year3-end consortium meeting in Munich in December hosted by project partner Immer Besser. Partners in attendance were proud to be part of the team who won the Piccaso Privacy award.

CSI-COP produced two databases from its citizen scientists’ investigations on the extent of tracking in websites and apps. Has a website you visited, or an app you use been featured in the investigations? Download the databases from the CSI-COP project website to find out more on the websites investigated by CSI-COP’s citizen scientists, as well as which apps were investigated for third-party default permissions.

CSI-COP produced their 9th newsletter featuring an interview by one of the volunteer citizen scientists explaining why online privacy is important. You can read the interview in the newsletter, here.

BioAgora welcomes the signing of a historic biodiversity agreement at COP15

Bioagora welcomes the signing of a historic biodiversity agreement at United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP15).

On 19 December, the last day of COP15, governments signed what is widely seen as a historic agreement to halt the destruction of the planet’s ecosystems. Bioagora as a project connecting science and policy making in the context of biodiversity conservation rejoices at this milestone agreement and supports its due implementation.

Bioagora specifically supports Target 21; focused on ensuring data availability, information and knowledge to decision makers, practitioners and the public. Similarly, Target 14 carries importance to the project as it outlines the need for full integration of biodiversity related concerns into poverty eradication strategies, strategic environmental assessments and environmental impact assessments.
