Quote of the Week:

It's only cold if you're standing still.

From the Soul of My Shoe.... Meet our New Board Members
Forward by Marissa Frusciante

In an effort to get to know one another a little better, for the next few weeks the Board is going to introduce themselves to you!   Some of the membership might be new to NewRo Runners and we felt it was important that you see the board as friendly faces that you could approach at any group run.

First up....
Sophia Okeke

In 2012 a few of my coworkers were desperate to enlist anyone to participate in Ragnar, a 24-hour relay race all over the USA. 12 runners piled in a van to run a 200-mile relay for 24 hours without sleep. I had never run in my life, but I figured. Why not? Who can go wrong with an all-expenses paid trip to Vegas?

After the life-changing Ragnar experience, I returned to NYC, joined NYRR, and ran the Ted Corbitt 9 miler in Central Park. It was a tough winter race but faster than my 9 miles in the Vegas desert. I was in love!

Fast forward 11 years, I have run 41 NYRR races, including the NYC Marathon, in 2016 and 2021. 16 races with NYC runs on Governors Island, Queens, and Brooklyn with NY City Runs. Numerous Turkey trots in New Rochelle, Mamaroneck Mount Vernon, and Yonkers. In 2022 I ran the Philly Marathon, and I am running the Paris Marathon this year.

My running career is just getting started. I enjoy the freedom running gives me, and running quiets my mind while at the same time making me feel like a champion!

Professionally I am the Director of People Operations at a Global nonprofit based in West Africa, I work from home and travel to West Africa 2-3 times yearly.
