Assistant Professor (CLTA) - 
Egyptian Archaeology Opportunity in NMC

The Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations invites applications for a three-year, contractually limited term appointment (CLTA) in the area of Egyptology with a focus on Ancient Egyptian Archaeology and Material Culture. This appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, and the anticipated start date is July 1, 2023.
NMC is seeking a scholar who will contribute to its curriculum and programs in the fields of Egyptology, Ancient Near & Middle Eastern Civilizations, and Archaeology, with the demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Ancient Egyptian Archaeology, Material Culture, and Artifact Analysis. A commitment to collaborative and interdisciplinary research and teaching, involving research opportunities for students, is strongly desired.

Publications

Perspectives on Arabic Linguistics XXXIII bookcover
Associate Professor Abdel-Khalig Ali has just published a book entitled "Perspectives on Arabic Linguistics XXXIII" with co-editor, Associate Professor Atiqa Hachimi, University of Toronto Scarborough (John Benjamins, 2022). 
This volume features eight peer-reviewed chapters based on papers presented at the 33rd Annual Symposium on Arabic Linguistics, held at the University of Toronto in 2019.

GRAPE Archaeological Field School for 2023 Summer Course

The Gadachrili Gora Regional Archaeological Project Expedition (GRAPE) Field School is now accepting students for the 2023 season through the GRAPE website. The field session will run for six weeks from May 1 to June 12, 2023.
All students are eligible to participate, and no prior field experience is necessary. Students will receive 1.0 credit under NMC261Y: Field Archaeology in the Republic of Georgia. This course is designed as a general practicum and training program in archaeological field methods.
As a field course, emphasis will be placed on active participation in ongoing research by the GRAPE in the Republic of Georgia. Students will receive extensive training in archaeological excavation and survey methods, survey procedures, the preliminary process of processing artifacts, and experimental archaeology – recreating ancient artifacts and lifeways. Weekly field trips explore the archaeology and culture of the region, which will supplement the primary focus on fieldwork experience. For more information, visit the GRAPE website

Upcoming Opportunities

Call for Letters of Interest:
Mellon Foundation Sawyer Seminars

The University of Toronto has been invited to submit one application for the Mellon Foundation’s Sawyer Seminars. The foundation seeks to fund comparative research on historical and contemporary topics of major scholarly significance. The seminars provide an opportunity for intensive study of a variety of fields, mainly - but not exclusively - in the humanities, arts and interpretive social sciences. 
The application process will be administered by the Jackman Humanities Institute (JHI) on behalf of the Vice-President Research, with all proposals submitted through the JHI.
The process for submitting a proposal runs in three major stages, and the application form for Stage One (Letter of Interest) is now live.

Middle East Studies Association

The Middle East Studies Association of North America (MESA) invites and encourages submissions from members for its 57th Annual Meeting to be held in person in Montreal, Canada, from November 2 - 5, 2023. 
All submissions must be made through myMESA (MESA’s membership and electronic submissions system), and MESA membership is required to submit a proposal.
Submissions may be in the form of pre-organized panels, pre-organized roundtables, or individual papers (to be formed into panels by the program committee). Submissions by students are more than welcome. For more information, visit the MESA website.

Experiential Learning Faculty Fellows Program

The Experiential Learning Faculty Fellows Program provides resources and support for continuing faculty to develop experiential learning opportunities in one of their existing courses or to create a new course with a significant experiential learning component. The program supports such initiatives over a three-year period, with the first year dedicated to course design and planning, and years two and three to implementation. There are two possible funding options from which to choose; all fellows receive pedagogical, partnership development and administrative support during course development and delivery from the Experiential Learning & Outreach Support (ELOS) team as well as a commitment from ELOS to provide administrative and partnership support, and TA / RA training for all EL Fellows’ courses for the duration of the Fellowship. The information sessions will be held on the schedule below.

Grant Opportunities:
ASMEA Annual Conference

The Association for the Study of the Middle East and Africa (ASMEA) is pleased to offer two grant opportunities to its members in conjunction with the Sixteenth Annual Conference, taking place in Washington, D.C., from November 4 to November 6, 2023. 
The ASMEA's mission is to promote the highest standards of academic research and teaching in the fields of Middle Eastern and African studies and related disciplines through programs, publications, and services that support the members, the international community of scholars, and interested members of the public.
  • ASMEA Research Grants:
ASMEA is offering Research Grants of $2500 to qualified students and scholars engaged in the study of the Middle East and Africa. Applicants may submit paper proposals on any topic as long as it constitutes new and original research and is relevant to the five qualifying topic areas: Minorities and Women, Military History, Governance and Economy, Faith, and Iran. Successful research grant applicants are required to present their research at the Sixteenth Annual ASMEA Conference. 
  • Conference Travel Grants: 
ASMEA is offering Travel Grants up to $750 to qualified scholars and students to present their research at the Sixteenth Annual Conference in Washington, D.C.

The Critical Digital Humanities Initiative (CDHI) is pleased to welcome Dr. Connie Crompton as the second guest in the 2022-23 Visiting Speaker Series. Dr. Crompton is a Canada Research Chair in Digital Humanities and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Ottawa. She is the Vice-President (English) of the Canadian Society for Digital Humanities, Director of the Humanities Data Lab, and an associate director of the Digital Humanities Summer Institute (University of Victoria).

The Case of Arab-Ottoman Imperialists of Istanbul

  • Speaker: Associate Professor Mostafa Minawi, Cornell University
The Michael E. Marmura Lecture Series in Arabic Studies and the Seminar in Ottoman and Turkish Studies (SOTS) present Mostafa Minawi, who will speak about his recent book, Losing Istanbul: Arab-Ottoman Imperialists and the End of Empire (Stanford University Press, 2022).
Mostafa Minawi is Associate Professor of History at Cornell University. He is the author of The Ottoman Scramble for Africa: Empire and Diplomacy in the Sahara and the Hijaz (Stanford, 2016).
This lecture is a collaboration between the SOTS and the Michael E. Marmura Lecture Series in Arabic Studies, with the support of Hearing Palestine, the Department of History, the Department of Near and Middle East Civilizations, and the Centre for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies.

Art and Activism in Contemporary Global Landscapes: Conversations with Contemporary Artists from the Islamic World

The Islamic Art & Material Culture Collaborative (IAMCC) is pleased to announce the launch of the second iteration of its online conversation series. This new series entitled "Art and Activism in Contemporary Global Landscapes" will consist of 4 monthly sessions held on Zoom on Saturdays from February to May at 11 AM (EST). The 2023 series aims to highlight the intersectionality and dynamism of art and activism by hosting conversations with contemporary artists from Islamic contexts who create works of art that demand social and political change. All sessions are free and open to the public, but registration via Eventbrite is required.
