Kia ora koutou katoa nga whanau o te kura

Welcome back for 2023 and a special nau mai haere mai to our new staff, students and whanau who join us in our 66th year of educating boys. We look forward to having you as part of our learning community and working together to provide an environment that is ‘best for boys’.

We have proven that in the last few years we can ‘weather a storm’ so I encourage each of you to look to the future with confidence and a sense of optimism despite the forecast. In 2023 we want to ‘believe in better’- better times, better opportunities, better outcomes. That's the kiwi spirit, it is part of our DNA and on the eve of Waitangi weekend, it is something we can remember and be very proud of.

I’m asking us to prioritise education for our young men and respect the power this has to unlock doors for your son's future. I am reminded of the Māori proverb:
Ko te manu e kai i te miro nōna te ngahere, Ko te manu kai i te mātauranga, nōna te ao.
It translates as: The bird that eats the miro berry owns the forest. The bird that feasts on knowledge owns the world.

This will require effort and commitment.  Our staff are primed and ready for the challenge. Our students will be encouraged to ACE it!- (A)ttendance, (C)ompletion, (E)ffort. Our records clearly show that when our boys employ these 3 keys, they achieve and realise their potential and discover what is ‘best’ for them. We ask whanau to be supportive of the school and their sons and we know that the cumulative effort of 100% commitment, from all partners, will ensure the best outcomes for our young men.

Enjoy the year and I look forward to working together to see the very best for our boys.

Nga mihi nui

REQUESTS FOR LEAVE DURING TERM TIME
I am concerned with the number of requests I receive from parents for time off for their sons during the school term to travel domestically or internationally for holidays.

I understand the educational value of travel but remind parents to be mindful of the impact time away from the classroom can have on your son's academic achievement.

Of particular concern is when this absence occurs at the same time NCEA internal assessments are planned, as this can have a significant effect on your son's NCEA results.

Ministry of Education regulations only allow me to give permission for absence from school due to illness or family bereavement and advise that all trips / holidays should be taken during official school holiday periods.

I would ask that all requests for leave are sent to me at principal@tbc.school.nz

My preference is for all leave of this nature to occur during the school holidays.  Leave from school for holiday travel that is taken outside of school holiday periods will be recorded as "explained but unjustified".

Thank you for your assistance with this.

NZ TOUCH RUGBY NATIONALS

The TBC Senior A  Touch team traveled to Rotorua for the NZSS Touch Nationals from 9-11 December 2022. This is a 3-day tournament where 20 Boys' teams from both the North Island and South Island were competing to be the best in the country. The conditions were wet and the forecast was predicting rain and wind throughout the tournament.

Day 1. Pool Results
Won vs Rosmini 5-3
Lost vs Kings High 5-8
Lost vs St John's Hamilton 3-5

We knew we needed to win 2 out of 3 of the games on Day 1, so we ended a wet and windy day with the team knowing we were now contesting the Plate division trophy.  We traveled back to our accommodation, soaking in the thermal hot pools we constructed a game plan to give us success for the next day.

Day 2. Plate pool results
Won v Manukura 9-5
Won vs John McGlashan 5-4
Won vs Mahurangi 10-1

Day 3. Semi-final and finals
Won semi vs Rosmini 6-5
Lost John McGlashan 7-8 after drop off finishing in 9th place.

Before leaving the tournament we presented TBC Sports Representative Ties to four senior players leaving school.
Kase Meyer, Reef Newdick, Lennox Ward, and Jackson Wood. These players have represented the college well and have made a fantastic contribution to TBC Touch. In the cup final, Kings High School played Otago Boys' with Otago boys' taking out the honours for 2022.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
School Health Service

The school nurses this year are Vicki (Mon-Thurs) and Stephanie (Thurs - Fri) who are fully registered nurses funded by the Western BOP Primary Health Organisation. The clinic is located down by the gym and there is no cost for the youth health services. This is in addition to the sickbay team at the main office with whom the nurses work closely, to provide best care to the boys at TBC.  There is also a GP who does a short clinic each Monday for those who may face barriers to accessing their own GP.

In an attempt to support our young men with any challenges and to identify any barriers to learning at an early stage, health assessments may be done in Year 9 (or other years if required) and include a discussion around; physical health, growth and development, hearing, vision, activities, eating and weight, school and home, drugs and alcohol, sexuality, mood and safety (HEADDSS).

If you would like more information or for your son
to 'opt out' from being involved then please contact Vicki or Stephanie:
