Today marks a new milestone in The Marshall Project's commitment to reaching audiences who need our investigative journalism the most. Meet the new Inside Story — developed by formerly incarcerated people for viewers behind bars.

Created in partnership with VICE News, Inside Story is a first-of-its-kind serialized news program about the U.S. criminal justice system distributed in prisons and jails.

The first episode is out now, and available to stream for free.

Across eight 23-minute episodes, Inside Story features stories that build on The Marshall Project’s investigations. It includes interviews with some of the most prominent changemakers in policy, entertainment and social justice, including Bryan Stevenson, La La Anthony, Dr. Carl Hart, Luenell, Piper Kerman, Gbenga Akinnagbe and Jason Flom. In its premiere, Inside Story explores battlegrounds related to juvenile justice, from Louisiana residents opposing youth detainment in Angola, to lawyer Bryan Stevenson’s efforts toward ending life without parole and death sentences for children. The very work that helped the show’s host, Lawrence Bartley, argue for his own prison release.

Whether you’re on the inside, love someone who is, or simply care about what’s happening in your country, this show is for you. — Lawrence Bartley, Publisher, The Marshall Project Inside

The series is designed to bring critical accountability and investigative journalism on the criminal justice system to incarcerated people. Prisons are one of America’s largest news deserts, and incarcerated audiences aren’t a priority for most news organizations.

Inside Story co-creator, executive producer and director Donald Washington Jr. says the team’s unique insight and focus is key: “We're able to say, what are the questions that people on the inside might have? What are their concerns? What are the desires that they have for this information?” The show will be available in nearly 1,200 prisons and jails across 48 states (and counting), via prison tablets and closed-circuit TVs.

We're incredibly proud to share this new video series with you. People in prison and jail have little access to reporting they can trust about the forces and institutions that shape their lives inside. The Marshall Project is working hard to change that, and donations from readers like you go a long way toward sustaining projects like this one.
