February 2023                                                Good

Hello Slow Food friends

It’s been a bit since we landed in your Inbox and so much has happened - from the wonders of the holiday season to those alarming atmospheric rivers (that still won’t solve our drought), and, unfortunately, the horrors of the recent shootings throughout our state. Any violence is unjust and when it affects those in our food system it saddens us even more so.

If you have the ability to help out financially, organizations like Kitchen Table Advisors, CAFF, Mandela and ALAS have rallied to assist flooded farms and the families of the Half Moon Bay shooting victims. As our good friend Chef Tu says, “We all we got,” and that goes for all of us as a greater food community supporting one another.

Despite the news, we here at SFEB are focused on the GOOD, looking forward into 2023. We’re working away on a variety of projects (if you saw our latest social media posts, you got a little hint at one of them) not least of which is welcoming some amazing new folks onto our leadership team.  As you can see above, most have two legs but a few have four ;-)

So who are they?  A food scientist, director of operations and freelance marketers, folks working in employee well-being and championing the cannabis industry and supporting smallholder farmers. Like our current team, ensuring a more sustainable and just food system ignites their passion - they're concerned with the loss of ancestral ties, support those farmers caring for our land and ecosystems, focused on interconnectedness and not shying away from the realities of where our food comes from.

They’re inspired by the work of Planting Justice, Deep Medicine Circle and City Slickers Farms.  They eat at Pomet, Daytrip, Rendez-Vous, Dimond Slice Pizza, Mujiri and Teni East Kitchen and hang out at Snail Bar, Friends and Family and Viridian.  And at least two folks admit to not being able to have Hot Cheetos or Cheez-Its in their houses or they’ll finish the bag. We’re not all perfect, I guess!
🤷‍♀️

We’re all getting together next Sunday to scheme and daydream about 2023 (and eat some Boichik Bagels, too) so look for more from us soon, including plans for an upcoming Supporters Gathering.

In the meantime join us for our monthly potluck next Thursday, this time celebrating brassicas. (You know you want to pull out your mad brussels sprouts skills…!)

Here's to the Good Work ahead,
The Slow Food East Bay Team

🐌 CALL TO ACTION

We might have had a lovely week of sunny skies, but the flooding and water damage to our farm regions has not magically disappeared. Many farms are still under water and the losses to crops and equipment is immense.
