Hey coalition members, This is a friendly reminder to please fill out the RCV for Presidential Primaries Endorsement Form before the end of the day Friday, February 3rd. It will make things easier and help keep everyone in the loop with the latest action alerts. Please, do not hesitate to reach out to Steph and me with any questions or concerns.

The problem the bill is solving:
  • In 2020, 1 in 4 voters who participated in the competitive Democratic Primary mailed in their ballots supporting a candidate who then dropped out before Election Day. Those voters were stuck without a say. Ranked-choice voting would give every voter the chance to vote their heart while still ranking backup choices in case their favorite drops out.
What the bill does:
  • Implements ranked-choice voting for the next Presidential Primary (allowing voters to rank up to at least five candidates)
  • Spells out the roles and procedures for the county auditors and Secretary of State, including educating voters
  • Provides the Secretary of State rule-making authority for certain procedures
Benefits of RCV for Presidential Primaries
  • No more voting for the "lesser evil" - RCV lets you vote for your favorite candidate without worrying about helping a candidate you don't like. No more strategic voting, just rank the candidates you like.
  • A proven upgrade - RCV was used in five states during the Presidential Primary in 2020. Next year Maine will start, and there are more states considering joining the list!
  • Voters engage with their ballots - Polls and post-RCV election surveys show that voters like ranking their candidates. In the five states that used RCV for presidential primaries in 2020, 75% of voters ranked at least a second choice.
