Bruno Clair founded his domaine in 1979, which at the time included various old-vine plots. His grandfather, Joseph Clair, founded the famous Domaine Clair-Dau in 1919 and is known for having convinced growers in Marsannay to replace their vineyards of Gamay and Aligote with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay after World War I. Today, Bruno oversees 23 hectares of vines that include choice parcels in highly-coveted grand crus and premier crus.
The wines have always found their style in Gevrey and have remained taught well-structured and reliant on the depth of elegant perfume through all the swings of fashion and dogma in Burgundy. Today that style is most certainly fully in vogue and Domaine Bruno Clair has taken a position close to but just below the likes of Rousseau and Roumier.
We think this is the position, the tier, that represents the best level to obtain blue-chip grand cru and elite 1er cru Burgundy from the Cote de Nuits. The fact that Bruno Clair also performs magic feats with Marsannay and in Savigny is just a bonus and testament to the quality of the domaine from top to bottom. This is a very serious estate and the wines are worthy of space in any cellar, at any level.
Here are some here some excerpts on the 2020 vintage in The Wine Advocate, from an article by William Kelley:
"Distinguished by their deep, saturated hues, prodigious concentration and vibrant flavors, the best 2020 reds are striking wines, built for the ages; and the year’s crop of expressive but incisive whites, built around racy acids and chalky structure, will unquestionably rank highly on any list of recent top-flight Chardonnay vintages.
The 2020 red Burgundies are arresting wines. Their deep, saturated hues are immediately striking and without obvious precedent, prompting Bouchard’s Frédéric Weber to trawl through the firm’s archived harvest notes to look for comparisons: he landed on 1929, a vintage therein described as being the deepest-hued of the century.
The 2020 white Burgundies clearly number among the very best produced in the last two decades. Deep, concentrated and chiseled, they unite generosity of fruit and textural plenitude with structural tension and grip to compelling effect."
