Principal's Message

Dear Lakeside Elementary Families,

Last week was filled with fun as we kicked off Kindness Month with Spirit Week and the 100th Day of School! Lakeside Lions also participated in a warm clothing drive to support local families in need through Alpha House GR. Thank you to all who participated in these various activities! We hope that our Lakeside community will take on the spirit of kindness everywhere they go by performing random acts of kindness at home and in their community, too.

Yule Ball- February 25 for students in grades 3-8
Calling all witches and wizards in grades 3-8: The 10th annual EGRPS Interscholastic Yule Ball is coming up on Saturday, February 25. Festivities will run from 6:00-9:00 pm at EGR High School. Look forward to a magical night of Harry Potter fun including returning favorites and new surprises. Please register your EGRPS students in grades 3-8 here: Yule Ball 2023 Registration.  All students must be registered to attend the Yule Ball and unfortunately, we cannot accommodate walk-ins. Registration will be open from February 6-20.  Students are encouraged to eat BEFORE they attend this event.  Refreshments will not be provided. Many Gaslight Village businesses are offering special Yule Ball fare the weekend of the event.

This event is made possible through generous contributions from all EGRPS Parent Teacher Organizations and local business interests. Volunteers are needed to conjure up an amazing night. Please sign up here if you are able to help us on Saturday, February 25.

Harry Potter Read Aloud Opportunity
We are seeking additional readers for upcoming Harry Potter Read Alouds. Every Thursday, from 11:40-12:05 p.m., students in grades 3, 4, and 5 are invited to the Learning Commons to hear Harry Potter and the Sorceror’s Stone. If you’re interested in reading to our students, please click here to sign up. All wizards and muggles are encouraged to join us!

Conference Scheduling
As we head into spring it is the time of year to schedule conferences. Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, March 9 and Tuesday, March 14.  Information on conference scheduling will be sent the week of February 13.

Valentine’s Day Reminder
Next Tuesday, February 14, classes will hold Valentine’s Day activities. To remain consistent with our policy regarding food in the classroom, we strongly recommend non-food based treats be considered if your child chooses to give valentines to his or her classmates. If Valentines are sent that include candy or pre-packaged treats, those items will be placed in backpacks to be enjoyed at home. Please refer to the Parent Handbook, linked here, for additional information regarding food in the classroom and thank you for helping keep all students safe.

EGR Public Safety Update
East Grand Rapids Public Schools continues to partner with East Grand Rapids Department of Public Safety (EGRDPS) to support our students. Officer Troy Brown, current EGRDPS school liaison officer, and additional Public Safety officers often visit the school to spend time with students. You may even hear about these officers playing soccer at recess! Please ask your child about the Public Safety officers they see around the building and reiterate that they are another way that we ensure their safety each and every day.

The EGR High School Academic Boosters are hosting a community book club discussion on March 7th at 9am at the EGRHS. It is open to all parents from the community, regardless of whether you have a high school aged student! The book is Thrivers: The Surprising Reason Why Some Kids Struggle and Others Shine, by Michelle Borja Ed.D.  They would love to have parents of elementary aged students join, and it is a great chance for parents to check out the high school if you have never been before. Do you love your children’s teachers or other staff members and want to reward them in a meaningful way this Valentine’s Day? Consider giving them STAR Awards from the Foundation.

STAR Awards honor outstanding teachers and staff members for going above and beyond for our students. For a donation of $25 or more to the Foundation, we’ll produce a STAR Award for your favorite teacher or staff member and either present it to them or give it to you to present it yourself. Best of all, your donation will go toward funding enhancement grants that offer our kids educational opportunities that are second to none. To honor a teacher or staff member quickly and easily, visit the STAR awards page on our website. You can also nominate teachers for the Foundation’s annual Excellence in Teaching Awards. Nominations are due by May 1.

   Children’s Used Book Sale

On January 27 and 28 a children’s used book sale was held to raise money for each elementary learning commons.  Books that had been removed from the three elementary schools due to minimal circulation in recent years or, in some cases, multiple copies of a title, were sold at the EGR Community Center during the two-day (very snowy) sale.  Thanks to our volunteers and staff, the sale was able to raise over $500 for each school to purchase new books as well as classic books with updated covers.  After the sale, the remaining books in good condition were donated to several local schools.

A very special thanks to the EGR Parks and Recreation Department, who provided the space for the sale free of charge, and to Friends of the Library volunteers, Shellie Adamy and Carole McDonald, who provided their experience and time during the sale.
