St. Mark's E-News

February 3, 2023
Light shines in the darkness for the upright, the psalmist sings. Isaiah declares that when we loose the bonds of injustice and share our bread with the hungry, the light breaks forth like the dawn. In another passage from the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus, the light of the world, calls his followers to let the light of their good works shine before others. Through baptism we are sent into the world to shine with the light of Christ. (from Sunday and Seasons).

COVID / RSV/ FLU UPDATE

At its November meeting, the Congregational Council decided it would be prudent for St. Mark's to align with the advice of the medical community by strongly recommending the wearing of masks while inside the building. To be clear, mask wearing is still optional, not mandated. A box of masks can be found on the information table in the Parish Hall for those who arrive without and wish to wear one.

Reflection & Review
Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to  complete the survey for the Stewardship Campaign.  The survey will be open for the next couple of weeks as we want to hear from as many of those affiliated with St Mark's as possible.  If you or any other members (including youth) from your household still have not done so, you can individually click on this link for the short survey.

Social Ministry News
"It’s a RAP”…well, almost.

Over the past few months Social Ministry Committee members have spent time considering the input we received from Indigenous leaders and our congregational members in 2022 on the topic of reconciliation with our Indigenous neighbours. Input was received through various education sessions, open meetings, a survey and other research conducted in 2022. We now have a draft Reconciliation Action Plan (“RAP”) for St. Mark’s that we submitted to church council for review at its’ January meeting. The draft plan has a number of different components aimed at different aspects or approaches to reconciliation, so that congregational members have the opportunity to participate in various ways. Stay tuned for further details as we move towards finalizing the RAP.

"Let's Talk: Again" continues
Session 5 happens this Wednesday, February 8 at 1 PM in the Parish Hall.

You are invited to join in the conversation as we resume the study of the New
Testament. If you are interested in history and the theology taught to us through
the New Testament, this is for you! The New Testament is a fascinating book, in fact 27 different books, which offer ban exciting opportunity to investigate and discuss Christian practices, conflicts of belief, the institution of the Church and of course Jesus of Nazareth.

This Wednesday:
The Quest for Unity in the New Testament
In this final lecture, revisit the paradox between the New Testament’s diversity and unity, a single text comprised of 27 different books. See how theologians and scholars over the years have tackled this paradox. Examples include the Christian leaders Irenaeus, Origen, and Martin Luther, as well as modern
historical researchers.

(A written synopsis of the Professor David Brakke video we will be viewing is available in the Church Hall near the front doors.)
Offering via PAD - Time to Review?
Do you use the Pre-Authorized Debit option to give a regular schedule of offerings to St. Marks?

If yes, please take a moment to consider what level of financial support you can provide in 2023. Like most households, our expenses are on the rise. If you have the means to increase your regular contribution, complete the PAD change form found HERE. and return it to the church office. A reminder that all PAD giving is directed towards general operating expenses. Gifts designated to a specific purpose must be made using an offering enveloped or via e-transfer (see below).

Not on PAD?  Take a moment to consider signing up for the PAD system. More details about how PAD works can be found on our website.

If PAD is not for you, a reminder that St. Mark's can accept donations via e-transfer. Use office@stmarkslutheran.ca for the email address and include a note in the message box of your financial institution's e-transfer function to indicate if any portion of your gift is for a designated purpose (e.g., Lutheran Urban Ministry, Urban Meals, Memorial Fund, Luther Village, etc.)

Thank you for taking a moment to think about how you will be able to financially support the congregation's mission and ministry in 2023.

Season of Lent Study Opportunity
For some, Lent is a time to take on a spiritual discipline, or commit to relearning.  Pastor Zsofi is offering an opportunity for the people of St Marks to revisit and relearn (or visit and learn for the first time) Luther's Small Catechism once a week on Friday evenings during the season of Lent in preparation for Easter.
The entire course is built around three kinds of source material that we see as essential to a meaningful experience of Luther’s Small Catechism.
  • Scripture and Tradition. For example, the Ten Commandments as cited in Exodus 20 or the Apostle’s Creed as we have it from Christian traditions.
  • Luther’s explanations of the scripture or doctrine from Christian traditions.
  • The "backstory" of Luther’s own life and times, the fertile soil of the Reformation itself.
Interested?
If you are interested in this study, please speak with or send Pastor Zsofi an email indicating your interest.
Need a copy of the church directory?
Over the past few weeks, several members have received emails from someone posing as Pastor Zsofi. We are unsure as to how member email addresses have fallen into the hands of scammers.  As a precaution, we have removed both the telephone/email directory and pictorial directory from the church website.

If you would like a copy of either of these directories, please contact the church office and an electronic version will be forwarded to you.
You can find out what's happening at St. Mark's in the coming weeks by viewing our online calendar.

CLICK HERE to view the calendar.

To have something added to the calendar, contact Lori in the church office.
