Winter 2023 Professional Newsletter

Greetings from SFG Project Coordinator

As the winter season comes to an end and we enter the vibrant warmth of spring, it's a perfect time to reinvigorate our projects, ideas, and passions that have lain dormant for the past few months. This is a time of renewal and new beginnings, and with it comes the perfect opportunity to strengthen families in our communities. Let's use the upcoming spring equinox as an opportunity to network and partner with other organizations, develop new skills, and explore new ideas and concepts related to those we serve. By doing so, we can create lasting positive change in the lives of children, families, and communities that will flourish for generations.

Kindly,

Kendra Cole, MPA

A Unique Perspective on Black History:
Examining Trauma & Resiliency in the Black Community

Strengthening Families Georgia celebrates the uniqueness of culture and diversity that unites the various communities across the state. Thus, we hold strongly to the belief our differences should be acknowledged and celebrated.  In honor of Black History, we celebrate beyond the month of February by continuing to recognize and honor the invaluable contributions of African Americans. Let us continue to raise awareness by acknowledging the struggles they have faced to get to where they are now and by recognizing the potential for continued progress.  By educating ourselves on the history of African Americans, we can help create a more equitable and just society for all.

The Historical Trauma Among African Americans podcast series brought to you by FRIENDS National Center for Community-Based Child Abuse Prevention (CBCAP) explores the multi-generational impact of historical trauma on African American families and their resiliency. This podcast series offers a unique perspective on the distinctive challenges faced by African Americans across the ages. From the cycle of oppression to the modern-day implications of generational trauma, professionals will learn how the past continues to influence the present, the powerful and long-lasting effects of trauma, and the resilience of African American families in the face of ongoing adversity. Professionals can gain insight into how to promote resiliency and healing within this community.

COMMUNITY RESOURCES
Unlock the Power of Resources to Strengthen Families

PROTECTIVE FACTORS TRAINING SERIES

The Strengthening Families framework is a research-informed approach developed by the Center for the Study of Social Policy (CSSP) to improve family strengths, enhance child development, and reduce the likelihood of child abuse and neglect. This approach works to equip child welfare systems, early education programs, prevention organizations, and other community-based initiatives with strategies to build five Protective Factors in families. These protective factors serve as buffers that enable caregivers facing stressors to access resources and develop the skills necessary to effectively raise their children. By implementing the Strengthening Families protective factors framework, caregivers can gain access to the tools and resources they need to provide their children with a safe, nurturing environment in which to thrive.

Enhance your work by attending a free 2-hour virtual session or self-paced online training on each of the Protective Factors. Learn how to effectively implement the Protective Factors in your work and gain valuable insights to help strengthen families. Sign up now to get the most out of the session and begin building stronger and healthier communities!
