Hi, Threshold! Hope you're enjoying a great week, and especially as we join together in this special season of prayer as a church.

I'm excited to teach this Sunday on the Ten Commandments! Those of us who are reading through The Story are finishing chapter 5, "New Commands, and a New Covenant." Looking at the life of Moses last week and this week has been especially rich. And you can't talk about Moses without taking a deep dive into the Ten Commandments! Hopefully this weekend will be for you a fresh encounter with a well-known passage.

As you prepare for Sunday worship, I invite you to read Exodus 20:1-21. As you read through the Ten Commandments, spend extra some time focusing on one commandment in particular. You choose which one.
  1. Think about why this commandment is good for you and for all of humanity.
  2. Give thanks to God for the commandment.
  3. Confess to God your sin related to the commandment and/or the spirit of the commandment.
  4. Spend a moment praising God for the forgiveness we have in Christ.
I think this reflection on the Ten Commandments is also a great way to lead us into our monthly celebration of the Lord's Supper this Sunday. You might find it helpful to review 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 as we prepare to participate in this meal together.

Looking forward to being together!

Threshold Church is participating in the 2023 Common Heart Hunger Walk. This is a great opportunity to come together to raise awareness about hunger in our community and raise funds to support Common Heart's food pantry programs. In Union County, it's estimated over 26,500 adults and children are hungry or facing the threat of hunger. That’s 10.7% of the residents of our county. 1 in 5 children in Union County live in homes facing food insecurity.  Each month, over 5,500 individuals are served through 11 pantry programs.

Please consider supporting the Hunger Walk by joining & walking with the Threshold Church team and/or giving to our page. Every dollar counts! Thank you. Be part of a small revolution of kindness.

Thunder. Lightening. Dense cloud. Fire. The Lord’s presence was clearly evident on Mount Sinai as he was writing His story for His people through new commandments and a new covenant.

His people promised: “We will do everything the Lord has said; we will obey.” (pg. 63)

But how soon we stiff-necks grow impatient. How soon we forget.

Golden calf. Worshiping idols. Broken stones. Broken covenants.

Yet despite his people being prone to evil, the GLORY of the Lord prevailed.

The Lord proclaims this about himself: “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving the wickedness, rebellion, and sin.”…(albeit jealous and just).. “I am making a covenant with you. Before all your people I will do wonders never before done in any nation in all the world. The people you live among will see how awesome is the work that I, the Lord, will do for you.” (pg. 68)

Chapter Five concludes with “The promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob was now a reality. And this new nation was to be different, so that the entire world would know and worship the one true God, the very source of life and hope.” (pg. 70)

So the mission of His people (then and now) will always be to bear witness to the glory of God for the good of the world. Do you radiate God’s presence to others?

This Sunday we have the privilege of celebrating the Lord’s Supper. Please come with your heart’s prepared to feast on the tangible signs of God’s saving loving kindness given to us through our Lord Jesus Christ.

This week’s homework:
  • Read Chapter 5 of The Story in preparation for Sunday’s message.
  • Next Week: Chapter 6- Wandering
  • Extra Credit: Ask God to examine your heart – Are you obeying his commandments in relation to the Lord and in relation to others?

Building our PNC Prayer Wall

As we support of our PNC (Pastor Nominating Committee) through prayer, let's become a PNC (Praying Non-stop Church)!

Does the Bible have anything to say about the importance of preaching? How is the preaching of God’s Word linked to our faith in Jesus Christ? The answers to both questions are found in the book of Romans. Please read Romans 10: 14 – 17. Our focus verse for the week is Romans 10:17, “So faith comes from hearing and hearing through the word of Christ.”

Prayer Requests:
  1. Let us focus our prayers this week on the importance of the gift of preaching. Please pray that the Pastor that God is calling to Threshold Church will have the gift of preaching and a deep love for the scriptures.
  2. Pray that God would give each of us a deep hunger to hear the preaching of God’s word. Pray that the evidence of our growing faith would be seen in that we are not hearers only, but doers of the word that is preached to us.
  3. Pray that God would bless Pastor Dori both in his preparation for and in his preaching of God’s word each week.
