STUDENTS LEARN ALONGSIDE INCARCERATED CLASSMATES AT WASHINGTON STATE PENITENTIARY

Outside of specific classes and conversations, the existence of the Washington State Penitentiary (referred to colloquially as “The Pen” among locals) is scarcely acknowledged. Professor Mitch Clearfield's in-Pen philosophy classes provide students with a classroom experience unlike any other, and connections they will not soon forget.

Whitman Athletics has been celebrating the 50th anniversary of Title IX by using Instagram to spotlight accomplishments of women's sports teams and student athletes throughout the history of the college. PPGWI HOSTS SCREENING OF SHORT FILM "WALLA WALLA"

Jan. 22, 2023, would have marked the 50th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade ruling. To commemorate the day, Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and Idaho (PPGWI) hosted a screening of the short film “Walla Walla'' at the Gesa Powerhouse Theatre. The screening was followed by a Q&A session with one of the film's leads, and touched on a range of topics related to reproductive healthcare with an emphasis on destigmatizing abortions as a medical procedure.

One of the most common ways people poke fun at liberal arts colleges is by joking about the hyperspecificity of courses. Although Whitman’s course catalogue is home to many obscure classes, student and faculty experiences illuminate the value of skill-based, hands-on and interdisciplinary courses. These unique classes allow Whitties to delve into new interests and explore fields that were previously unknown to them in a focused setting.

HOW A KITTEN HACKED THE GOVERNMENT

Recently, the U.S. government was hacked. A long list containing the names of individuals who are part of the Terrorist Screening Database, meaning they are either prohibited from boarding any aircraft or subjected to increased security screening, was leaked online. The list comprised of over 1.5 million different names. Both impressive and alarming, news of the hack took social media by storm, but for an unexpected reason – the identity of the hacker.

This week on the "Whitman Wire Podcast," reporter Audrey Marthin checks in with a few students who are at different points in their off-campus studies experience. Marthin also speaks with Assistant Director of Off-Campus Studies Nadir Ovcina to learn more about institutional support for studying beyond Walla Walla.
