Greetings Forest Park Students and Families,

Happy first day of February!  If you get the chance to visit inside our school building, take a look at the displays featuring student work in honor of Black History Month.  Students and you will find posters as well; please engage your students in conversations about what they learn from their own work and the posters related to Black History.

Next Monday, 02/06, students attending our school wide assembly will learn more about February's word of the month:
Upstander!  I witness Forest Park Foxes upstanding each and every day!  Thank you for helping each other, respecting each other, holding each other accountable to best academic and social efforts, and for getting to school each day eager to participate in joyful experiences.  Students, prepare yourselves, Monday’s assembly will be packed with some motivating activities that will showcase what it means to be an upstander!

Speaking of joyful learning experiences, FPE relaunches our annual Science Fair/Learning EXPO this Friday, 02/03!  Students will receive a packet with guidelines and a work schedule.  This project is offered to students who wish to join, grades Kindergarten through fifth (all participation voluntary).  Students, you may work in groups of two or three (no larger) if you wish.  We plan to showcase your work in the gym on Thursday, March 23 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm, (for the community) and on Friday, March 24 during the school day for students, teachers, and staff.  This link contains a copy of the packet (hardcopies will be placed in backpacks at the end of this week).

Proud to stand among such Upstanding Foxes, Dr. Martini
IMPORTANT SCHOOL RELATED UPDATES:

February Super Power

Our Superpower of the month is “Upstander”. We will focus our discussions this month on what to do if a student sees or hears mean behavior in our classrooms or school. We will be learning about bystanders vs. upstanders. We all want our students to become upstanders, but like other social skills, this takes direct teaching, modeling and practice.

Bystander
Stands by and watches
Might laugh or join in
Does nothing
Stands with the mean person
Allows the meanness or bullying to continue
Upstander
Stands up to the mean person
Cheers up the target
Tells the mean person to stop
Helps the target walk away
Stands next to the target

We consider our school a very special community where we can use our “superpowers of the month” to make our time here even better. Students are encouraged to be upstanders and help create a positive school culture where everyone can feel safe and can learn. Here are some phrases that upstanders might use when they see anyone being mean -  “We don’t treat people like that in our school”, “Hey, that was really mean”, “Stop saying that”. Some phrases to practice when the upstander is standing with the targeted student could be “Don’t listen to them, that’s not true”, “Come on, let’s go somewhere else”, “They are just being mean, don’t think about what they said”.

AUCTION UPDATE & NEWS
Why do we host a Spring Auction? The FOFPE Spring Auction is the largest fundraising event of the year. Most of the funds that FOFPE raises are used to hire Educational Assistants and other staff. Deb and Jono’s positions are paid for by funds raised through the FOFPE foundation. This year we are also funding the .25 position for the lunch recess attendant. This role has allowed the EAs and teachers to get their lunch breaks in a timely fashion by ensuring that we have staff on the field during recess. Our goal for the auction is to raise $100,000 towards our $210,000 annual goal. The auction is also a great way to meet new people, make new friends and have fun while also making a difference for our school.

Do you have something to donate to the auction? A vacation home? Sports Tickets? VIP access? We are seeking products, experiences, and services that could be bundled with other items to create an attractive auction package.
Contact Sarah Shively at sarahshively1@gmail.com if you have something to donate for the event.

Friends of Forest Park Elementary will host the 2023 Spring Auction Friday May 12, 2023 5:00-9:00PM at the MAC (Multnomah Athletic Club https://themac.com/web/pages/events
