San Francisco's Chinese New Year Festival & Parade is the largest Spring Festival parade outside of Asia and consistently ranks as one of the top ten parades in the world. For almost a century, this spectacular event has served as the perfect cap to the new year's celebration. The cultural richness of the Bay Area is displayed at the parade, featuring lion and dragon dances, Kung Fu demos, and plays held by communities from various backgrounds. Parade participants rode their floats from downtown San Francisco and into Chinatown to celebrate Chinese culture and welcome in the New Year.

MHACC is a sponsor of the parade and our floats will also be featured. Everyone is warmly invited to attend the event, bring their families, and share the joy of this momentous occasion.

Candlelight vigil

🕯️🕯️🕯️

Mass shootings occurred in Monterey Park City, Los Angeles, and Half Moon Bay, San Francisco, where many Chinese people were celebrating the lunar new year. 18 died, a great loss to their families and loved ones. On 1/26, the grieving Chinese American community held a candlelight vigil at San Francisco's Chinatown's Garden Corner Plaza. People silently prayed for the victims and their families while holding candles.

At the scene, MHACC’s director Elaine said that while we mourn the deaths, we must also emphasize gun regulation and mental health issues among Chinese seniors. She sobbed, "California's mental health system is broken." Elaine noted that Chinese culture discourages mental health discussions, making it harder to get help. If the personalities and living habits of our relatives and friends change, we should pay more attention to them instead of ignoring or avoiding them, which will make them feel alone and fuel their extremely emotional behavior.

In the three years of the pandemic, Elaine has attended numerous funerals of elderly unusual deaths, most of which are mental health-related, highlighting Asian mental health issues. She advised against escalating conflicts during mental crises. Call 911 or 1-800-881-8502 for MHACC assistance.

A 2015 review article on "Elder age Psychostic" estimated that 23 percent of people will develop psychotic symptoms later in life, such as paranoia, delusions, hallucinations, and disorganized thoughts or speech. Health issues usually underlie "crazy" or "irrational" behavior. Drugs, alcohol, sickness, Alzheimer's, anxiety, and depression may be triggers. We cannot predict tragedies, but we can prevent them by paying attention to the elderly, learning to recognize warning signs, and helping them.

On September 30, 2022, Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law AB2596, making California the first state in the United States to officially recognize the Lunar New Year as a legislative holiday.

On January 29, 2023, OCIC successfully hosted the first-ever Lunar New Year's Parade in history, with the theme of "Oakland in Change"。Sheng Tao, the new mayor of Oakland, said that the parade will become an annual event, which is about love, prosperity, and community. Tan Lianna has said, “I have a lot of faith that the Asian community will recover from the pandemic.” The bill's author, State Assemblyman Evan Low said, “We enjoy each other's blessings and culture diversity.”
More than sixty-one parade units and almost ten thousand people took part in this event. There are gongs and drums, and lion dances are performed. The MHACC staff brought two lovely big pandas to the occasion, where they delighted the crowd and garnered much acclaim.

In February, daffodils grow in great quantities. These flowers bloom during the Lunar New Year and represent self-esteem, confidence, and purity. Daffodils originated from the Fujian region of China. Over a hundred years ago, the Chinese traveled across the ocean and came to the United States. They brought daffodil seeds along with their festivals, language, and food.

"Winding its way across valleys and along rivers, a pleasant breeze fills the air. From spring through fall, daffodils have been a constant in Chinese culture for countless generations."
"Daffodils have always brought the warmth of the Chinese people's motherland and lighted the voyage into the 21st century, from then until now, in every precarious time."
