News From the Nest

Families,

We have a full week of learning and fun planned for our students next week!

  • We will continue celebrating Black History Month and have activities each day to support College and Career Motivation Week. Please continue reading the Hoot for all of the Homecoming Week details!
  • Kindergarten - 5th-grade teachers will be hosting Parent Teacher conferences throughout the week. Please make sure you check your Dojo messages to sign up for a conference if you haven't already.
  • I will be hosting a Principal Chat and Chew on Friday, February 17 at noon via Zoom. I hope you will grab your lunch and join me for some school updates. You can log in HERE or use the following meeting credentials: Meeting ID: 870 1620 2400 Passcode: Bolton
  • We still would like more parent volunteers for our I Love Reading Celebration party tomorrow. All K-5th grade students will join the fun during their specials. We particularly need additional volunteers for our 4th-grade time slot. Please sign up HERE if you can help.

If you haven't already, please check out the information about SOFi's Night on Saturday, March 4. This is a night you don't want to miss!

Thank you!

-Shavaun Mincey, Principal

Get Your Tickets for SOFi's Night

The 9th Annual SOFi's Night Charity Auction benefiting Bolton Academy is coming up on Saturday, March 4, at the Westside Warehouse, from 7 to 11 pm (6 pm if you're a SOFi VIP!)  SOFi's goal is to raise $65,000 this year so that it can continue funding its yearly initiatives like IB training and cultural events, as well as new and exciting improvements at the school!

Please spread the word, forward the link and get your tickets at the event website. Remember people can donate and bid on the silent auction items virtually if they can't attend in person!

SOFi is also looking for sponsors and donation items that it can auction off at the event.  Please check out the various sponsorship levels on our website, and send us an email if you have any items you'd like to donate!

We're Still Accepting Wine Wall Donations

We had a great time at wine wall parties last month in Dupont Commons and at Round Trip Brewing. If you were unable to attend, you can still donate a bottle of wine to the wine wall by dropping a bottle off at 1933 Brantley Walk Lane. Feel free to email us and we can connect you with a Board member who lives close by!

Homecoming Week

To help us create a homecoming feel, parents are invited to be in the crowd outside for our Homecoming Parade on Friday, February 17. If you went to an HBCU or pledged, please wear your HBCU or greek gear. The parade begins at 9:00 a.m. Please arrive by 8:45 and line the sidewalks. There is no need to check in at the front office. All parents are welcome!

Thank You Mr. Steward!

National School Counselor’s week is underway. We are celebrating our school counselor, Mr. Steward for all that he does for our kiddos at Bolton Academy! Mr. Steward is a thinker, communicator, honorable, and caring. We know that we can always count on him!

Valentine's Day

Since all students do not celebrate Valentine’s Day, we plan to celebrate caring and kindness on February 14. One of the IB Learner Profile attributes is CARING, and we want our students to know that caring doesn't just happen one day; it can happen every day! All students can participate in the sending and receiving of cards, but if you plan to participate please send in enough for every person in your class. Teachers may ask their room parents to assist with the activities, but we will not be hosting additional guests on this day. Thank you for your understanding!

Order Your Yearbook Today

We are excited to announce that in partnership with the PTA, Bolton Academy will have a yearbook this year! The yearbook will include your child’s individual photo and photos from some of our biggest events! You can pre-purchase your yearbook HERE. Yearbooks will have a hardcover and cost $30 until Thursday, March 2. All orders placed after March 2 will cost $35. All yearbooks will be distributed in May. We also plan to offer a limited number of pages for sale for 5th-grade congratulatory messages and local businesses. We will share more information about how to purchase these ads soon.

We look forward to starting this new Bolton tradition and hope you will support us!

Math Resource Review

Atlanta Public Schools created a committee to review a multitude of math resources for the 2023-2024 school year. Once those resources were reviewed, the top three were sent to schools for parents and staff to offer input. Those resources are now available for you to view and give your input! They are in Ms. Haley’s room (Rm. # 107), and you are welcome to check them out from 7:45 a.m. -1:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Once you have had the chance to review them, please record your thoughts by voting! There will be a QR code that you can scan, vote, ask questions, and/or provide feedback. Please check in with the front office and let them know you would like to look at the math resources in room 107. The materials will be on display until the end of this month. If you have any questions, please feel free to email Mr. White.

We would love to feature student art during our Black History Program on February 28. This year, we are looking for portraits of the individuals that will be featured in the program. If your children would like to participate, please have them create their portrait on 9 x 12" paper. Any drawing/painting medium is welcome (pencil, colored pencil, marker, paint, collage, etc.). Please send me a message letting me know who your child will be drawing to ensure that we have a variety. All submissions will be due before Winter Break on February 17.

Walk & Roll Safety Tips

We shared these safety walking tips from the GA Department of Transportation during our morning announcements with our students. If you have a walker, especially if they are old enough to walk to or from school on their own, we ask that you go over these at home with them.

  • Make eye contact with drivers. Make sure they see you!
  • Cross at intersections, and use crosswalks when possible.
  • Look left, right, left as you cross, and watch for turning cars.
  • Be visible. Wear bright, reflective clothes and carry lights.
  • Use safe routes. Know your route, and stick to it.
  • Walk and roll with friends or a trusted adult.
  • Use sidewalks for pathways when possible.
  • No sidewalk? Walk facing traffic (on left), and ride bicycles on the right.
  • Learn and follow the rules of the road.

BASC-3 BESS Assessment

APS is committed to creating a culture of student support and supporting the needs of the whole child. All schools administer the Behavior and Emotional Screening Scale (BASC-3 BESS). All K-5 teachers will complete an assessment for each of their students. In grades 3-5, students will have the opportunity to complete the self-rating scale. As parents, you also have the ability to complete an assessment for your child. The parent window is open now until March 7. You can complete the parent rating and learn more about the entire process HERE. Together, this information helps us to understand the needs of all students and to make effective plans to support those needs at school, class, and individual levels.
