It Is Time for Annual Distributions
Most of the Foundation's 200 Funds provide an annual distribution, a payout of earnings from money that was invested. These distributions are used for a variety of grant purposes in our community.
The Foundation has funds that are designated specifically for grant making. The annual distribution from these funds serves as the budget from which we provide grants to our local nonprofits throughout the year. Four quarterly grant-application windows exist for our nonprofits to request funding for their projects.
For funds in which a designated nonprofit is the focus, the annual distribution is provided as a grant to the organization in the 1st quarter. These are typically applied towards furthering their mission, such as for operations. Scholarship funds' distributions pay for the annual high school scholarship awards.
The annual distribution is paid from the fund's investment earnings. The amount is calculated at 4% of the value of the fund over 5 years. Calculating earnings over a 5-year period spreads out market fluctuations, reducing the negative impacts from a challenging year. This practice also provides nonprofits and grant committees the knowledge for planning ahead.
The Foundation Finance Committee recommends the final distribution for approval to the Board of Trustees. If this process sounds interesting, you may enjoy joining our Finance Committee or one of our Grant Making Committees.
Foundation funds grow through your donations, which build the annual distributions, providing more funding for grants into our community and higher annual distributions to our nonprofits for their operational use.
