Headlines

As part of its Experience Northwestern series, The Graduate School is raffling tickets to the Bienen Ensembles’ upcoming performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute), directed by Joachim Schamberger and conducted by Andrew Bisantz. The performance will be on Thursday, February 23 at 7:30 PM at Cahn Auditorium.
 
To enter the raffle, please complete this entry form by 11:59 PM on Wednesday, February 15, 2023. Winners will receive two tickets each.
Applications are open for the Research Communication Training Program (RCTP), a 10-week workshop series designed to enhance the communication skills of TGS students and postdoctoral trainees across disciplines and backgrounds. The program goals are to increase awareness of the urgent need for excellent research communicators and to improve presentation skills.

RCTP will be held in person this Spring with cohorts in Evanston and Chicago. Space is limited. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until Friday, February 10. Learn more and apply here.
Sign up for the Norris Mini Courses Workshop Day on Saturday, February 11. Try out workshop versions of the regular six-week Norris Mini Courses and learn what other instructors have planned for the fall! Morning sessions will be held from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM, afternoon sessions from 1:00–3:00 PM, and a closing reception at 3:00 PM with refreshments. Call for Norris Mini Courses Proposals


Norris Mini Courses is currently accepting proposals to teach new and innovative Mini Courses for Spring 2023. The Norris Mini Courses program offers a wide variety of non-credit, recreational classes for the Northwestern and Evanston community. They are looking for instructors to teach new and innovative Mini Courses that appeal to the local community. This is a paid opportunity, ideal for graduate students, postdoctoral trainees, staff, and faculty who have teaching experience and are content experts in a subject. Submit proposals here by Monday, February 13.
Apply to become a presenter at TEACHx 2023, Northwestern's annual celebration of innovation in teaching and learning through technology, to be held Wednesday, May 17 and Thursday, May 18 on the Evanston campus. Sessions will feature a mix of interactive presentations, panels, workshops, and poster sessions focused on the following topics:
  • Accessibility
  • Universal Design for Learning
  • Inclusive teaching
  • Innovation through technology
  • Grading and assessment strategies
  • Self-care/empathetic teaching (student care)

Professional Development
  • Register for the Academic Laboratory Management & Leadership Symposium (ALMLS) virtual four-day course to be held in March 2023. This course is designed to equip postdocs and junior faculty in the biomedical, physic, and life sciences within the professional competencies to lead innovative and productive research programs. Learn more and register here by the discounted registration deadline on Friday, February 3.
     
  • Attend a Keeping Current with Scholarly Literature workshop on Wednesday, February 8 from 4:00–5:00 PM via Zoom.   • Apply to attend the Alzheimer's Association Interdisciplinary Summer Research Institute (AA-ISRI) to be held Monday, August 14 – Friday, August 18 in Chicago. The AA-ISRI is an immersive, no-cost opportunity for early-career researchers in psychosocial care and public health to further their knowledge of dementia science and accelerate breakthroughs in the field. Join English Language Programs on Friday, February 3 at 1:00 PM CST via Zoom for a virtual language table on grammar challenges. This open format conversation will explore different grammar topics that many call challenging, frustrating, and interesting. Learn more and register here.

Seeking Panelists for a Spanish-Language Webinar on Finding STEM Postdoc Positions in the U.S.


A group of Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers within the Big Ten Academic Alliance consortium are seeking panelists from the physical sciences and engineering to host a webinar to be held in April for aspiring international postdoctoral scholars. This webinar aims to help shed light on the process for finding STEM postdoctoral positions in the U.S., in particular for those from outside the U.S. in Latin America.

Panelists must be prepared to present the webinar in Spanish, which will be recorded and shared as a free online resource. Interested panelists should email outreach coordinator
