UNECE launches biggest ever international effort to update guidance for censuses

In the largest ever effort of its kind, a multi-year UNECE project has kicked off to produce internationally agreed guidance and advice for conducting the next round of censuses, foreseen around 2030. All UNECE countries, and many beyond the region, rely on the Conference of European Statisticians’ Recommendations for Population and Housing Censuses to help them plan and carry out censuses and ensure that they are reliable, cost-effective and comparable. The update of regional recommendations lays the groundwork for a subsequent global revision of the overarching UN Principles and Recommendations for Population and Housing Censuses.

Promoting the role of market surveillance to combat counterfeit goods

According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), in 2019, imports of fake products into the European Union (EU) accounted for around 6.8% of all imports. Statistics show that counterfeiting affects intellectual property owners in the UNECE region more than any other region in the world, with some UNECE member states experiencing the highest rates of fake products seized. A recommendation of UNECE’s Working Party on Regulatory Cooperation and Standardization Policies aims to promote the use of market surveillance infrastructure to protect consumers against counterfeit goods.

Regulation that extends automated driving up to 130km/h enters into force

Adopted by the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations, the amended regulation extends the maximum speed for automated driving system (ADS) for passenger cars and light duty vehicles up to 130 km/h on motorways, and allows automated lane changes, among other provisions. The amendment builds on the experience in various countries following the adoption of the UN Regulation on Automated Lane Keeping Systems, the first binding international regulation on so-called “level 3” vehicle automation, in June 2020.

Environment

UNECE and partners support Uzbekistan to strengthen environmental policymaking

Uzbekistan has improved its environmental performance in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to water and sanitation, and forests and tree cover loss. But, significant challenges remain related to air quality, water resources and wastewater treatment, and environmental health and biodiversity. To help evaluate the effectiveness of measures taken to protect the environment as the basis for sustainable development, UNECE and partners have organized a training seminar in Tashkent to develop a methodology for the country’s National Report on the State of the Environment.

Bringing standards to supply chain experts

Standards touch nearly every aspect of our daily life through all the products that we use and consume each day. The assessment of products against standards is increasingly becoming an essential link in the global supply chain. Unfortunately, awareness among the majority of stakeholders is currently limited. Many university or secondary school graduates who enter the workforce in international trade receive no training on standards and quality infrastructure. UNECE has developed a model curriculum with over 15 modules that educational institutes can use to introduce this subject to their students.

UNECE's roadmap to help Republic of Moldova to develop a vibrant national innovation system

The Republic of Moldova increasingly recognizes the role of innovation as a key driver of competitiveness and economic growth. Yet, challenges remain for building a national innovation system that effectively supports sustainable development. To bolster reform efforts, UNECE has finalized the Roadmap on Innovation and Technology Transfer, with concrete strategic goals and indicators to measure the achievement of innovation-led sustainable development in the country.
