Cold Front Odds & Ends 2.3.23

The temperature outside is dropping but we have some steaming, hot deals that are sure to combat the cold. January & February are always a fun time in our industry because after a rampant holiday season, there are always some crazy deals that got lost in the hustle and bustle. Distributors are dropping prices and trying to unload wine in the warehouse to make room for new vintages. Annual allocations of collectors items are showing up, close-out lists are being combed over, and we're tasting new things to enhance our selection daily. This year has been prolific in terms of dry January, which seems to have finally caught on. Our Non-Alcoholic beer, wine and spirits sales were through the roof last month but it's time to hop back on the wagon. Here are some special deals listed below that should entice you to light a fire and pull some corks this blustery weekend.
2020 Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape

97pts Robert Parker
97pts James Suckling
96pts Decanter
96pts Jeb Dunnuck

We look forward to the Beaucastel release every year because it is the true benchmark for quality in terms of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. As the yields have gone down in recent years, our allocation has dwindled despite a string of incredible vintages. The 2020 is no exception. Absolutely classic vintage in Southern Rhone and the scores match up. We only have a handful of these wooden six-packs to sell this year so please act quickly.

"Very dense black-fruit aromas, but also licorice, an entire microcosm of spice and a whiff of smoked bacon. Very dense and meaty with an incredible tannin structure that enables this to be simultaneously very big and elegant. Super-long finish with enormous mineral freshness. Drink or hold."

2021 Rudi Pichler Ried Kollmutz Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Wachau

98pts James Suckling

We've had a great run with some serious values in Gruner Veltliner and this is the other end of the spectrum; the collector's Gruner from one of the best producers in all of Austria! Rudi Pichler's wines have a cult following, known for their precision, power and longevity. This is my favorite of his bone-dry Gruners that is like drinking lightening in a bottle now and one that will age seamlessly for decades.

"Incredibly deep and youthful nose of the most amazing herb garden you can imagine! So richly textured, concentrated and incredibly precise that you wonder which way to turn! The incredibly long and invigorating finish leaves you literally breathless. Enormous aging potential. Drink or hold."

2021 Oenops Apla Rose'

92pts James Suckling

I know it's subzero degrees outside but hear me out.... Off-Season rose' is the best time to buy pink if you're looking for a monster deal. When a producer (from Greece in this instance) has a rose' release and it doesn't land stateside until the end of the Summer, there's a traffic jam in the warehouse. Cases need to move to make room for the new vintage. This just so happens to be everything I'm looking for in a rose' too; bone-dry, light pink in color with gorgeously fresh aromas and flavors of ripe peaches, pink grapefruit and lemon peel. It's stunning and you can grab a case at a fraction of the original price in preparation for Spring!

2019 Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour Private Reserve

100pts James Suckling
#1 Wine of the Year

Not much else to say here other than we have one 6pk left of the #1 Wine in the World according to wine critic James Suckling.

"Wow! The aromas to this are really exceptional, with a tangerine edge to the blackcurrants, graphite, lead pencil, flowers and wet earth. It changes all the time. So expressive and refined. Full-bodied with great intensity and depth of fruit. The ultra-fine tannins display millions of layers. The texture on the palate is superb and lasts for minutes. This is the new 1974 George de Latour, which was a legend. Real Napa Valley red here. Drinkable now, to understand it, but truly great in five to six years and onwards. Benchmark"

NV Cantina Sorbara Lambrusco Friedmann 1.5 L MAGNUM

90pts James Suckling

We can't get enough Lambrusco around here and this just so happens to be one of our favorite producers that had some magnums laying around. This version of Sorbara Lambrusco is not your typical inky, purple style. Rather, it boasts light pink colors and fizzy aromas of wild strawberries, white fruit and flowers. It's bone dry and it goes with food better than most wines. Over 50% off until these extreme party favors disappear.
