UPDATES FROM THE BOARD

CARL Strategic Survey
How can CARL better serve you and your needs? Take our CARL Strategic Survey and let us know! The survey should take less than 10 minutes and will help the CARL Board as we plan the future of the organization.

Membership Database and Website Updates
CARL is currently in the process of migrating our membership database and website to the Wild Apricot association-management platform. We expect to have the membership database transferred to the new platform in May and will keep you informed of any actions that may be required on your part. In early summer, we anticipate needing a few volunteers to test the usability of the new website. If you are interested in helping, please reach out to the Membership Director, Kelli Hines, at khines@westernu.edu.

Volunteers Needed: CARL 2024 Conference Planning Committee
The biannual CARL conference is a well-loved and well-attended CARL sponsored event. Now is your chance to shape the future of librarianship in California by serving on the 2024 Conference Planning Committee.

Volunteers are needed to seat the CARL 2024 Conference Planning Committee. This team leads conference planning, including developing the theme, budget, timeline, keynote selection, call for proposals and more. Conference planning will take place between April 2023-April 2024 and includes approximately 6-8 hours per week. On-boarding with previous conference planners will take place during April-May 2023.

Please submit a short statement of interest, including event planning experience, and other relevant skills to Shamika Simpson (ssimpson@lbcc.edu).

Spring Event

Join ALIGN, CLA’s Academic Interest Group, and NCTPG as we host "When the Back of House Becomes the Front of House: The Changing World of Technical Services," an in-person event at Santa Clara University on Friday, April 21. Topics include:

  • Do tech services staff and librarians now help users directly, becoming public-facing, such as with troubleshooting access issues or notifications about new acquisitions?

  • Who is now doing the work of tech services?

  • What tech services activities are still performed locally?

  • What I wish they knew about my job!

  • At the institutional level, what are the benefits, costs, and opportunities of being an independent library versus a consortial library in a time of increasing vendor processing and content management?

  • What is the impact on discovery systems, metadata, and findability of records?

  • What new and long-standing personnel equity issues need addressing?

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Summer Peng
Headshot of Summer Peng

Where do you currently work, and what is your job title/role?

Currently, I serve as the Business and Economics librarian at California State University, Los Angeles, fulfilling the role of a subject specialist and departmental liaison to collaborate closely with the College of Business and Economics. My primary responsibilities include providing classroom-based instruction, individualized research consultations with students, reference services, creating research guides, and selecting relevant materials to support the institution's educational, pedagogical, and research objectives.

Why did you join CARL? What do you most enjoy about being a CARL member?

My decision to join CARL was motivated by my desire for professional development opportunities, and I have found that my membership has enabled me to remain abreast of emerging trends and best practices in the field. The workshops and programs offered by CARL have been particularly valuable, as they have provided me with opportunities to develop new skills. The brainstorming and idea exchange sessions on library cooperation and development fascinated me. In addition to these benefits, CARL has facilitated networking opportunities with fellow librarians and provided access to professional development resources and advocacy efforts supporting the academic library community. I appreciate the diverse community of librarians that CARL comprises, as this enables me to learn from different perspectives and contribute to the field in a meaningful way.

Are you working on anything special right now or in the near future you'd like to share with other CARL members?

Since arriving at Cal State LA, I have been deeply committed to promoting diversity and appreciating various cultures. I have proactively reached out to the Cross-Cultural Center and the Division of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging to foster the AAPI community on campus and promote an inclusive and equitable campus climate. As an inaugural board member of the Asian American Pacific Islander Faculty & Staff Association, I have worked with colleagues to explore a range of activities the group could engage in, including social events, food tours, invited talks, and community-based initiatives.

We formed an AAPI Heritage Month Committee comprising over 20 members from various academic colleges and departments within the Student Affairs division. Recently, we have finalized the AAPI Heritage Month calendar structure, ensuring that the calendar of events for the mid-April to mid-May period accurately reflects the diverse range of cultural and educational activities planned across the campus. The affinity group aims to build a sense of community among AAPI faculty and staff and increase the AAPI presence on campus.

What new approaches to your work have you tried recently? Have any of them been particularly successful or challenging?

In my library instruction, I have applied the career-engaged instruction approach to make library research relevant to the career goals of our students. This approach was inspired by Cal State LA's pioneering Career-Engaged Departments Program, the country's first program of its kind. The program seeks to embed "career-engaged" content into coursework and to help students navigate the post-pandemic workforce.

To implement this approach in my library instruction, I designed career-oriented lesson plans to teach students how to locate business information relevant to their career aspirations and how to use library databases for interview preparation. I also demonstrate how students can apply the databases they have learned in the classroom to their potential careers following graduation. At the beginning of each class, I informally survey students' majors and career interests after graduation and use the industry that students have selected as an example to keep them engaged.

During the demonstration of business databases, I also highlight their practical applications in corporate settings, emphasizing how gaining data literacy can enhance students' competitive advantage in the job market and help them achieve their personal and career goals. Furthermore, I connect business knowledge to interview skills and provide examples of how students can utilize their business knowledge during job interviews.

Overall, I have found that when library instruction is career-engaged, students are more engaged in the classroom and more confident in using library databases for research.

What’s something you recently read/watched/listened to that you can’t stop thinking about or is helping you process recent events? Why?

I recently read Dr. Chang C. Chen's book, Herstory: The Legal History of Chinese American Women, which left a lasting impression on me. The author chronicles the struggles of Chinese American women who fought for equal rights through legal means, starting as early as 1848. These landmark cases, which dealt with issues such as discrimination, education, and voting rights, have significantly impacted not just Chinese Americans but all Americans.

In light of recent events, this book has provided me with a means to process and make sense of these events. As a result, I contacted Dr. Chang C. Chen to discuss the possibility of showcasing her travel exhibit at our library. After working together, we have begun preparations for the exhibit slated for March 2024.

Overall, reading Herstory: The Legal History of Chinese American Women has stimulated my critical thinking regarding gender equity and social justice issues, motivating me to take action to help create a more equitable world.

The Long Beach City College Library is excited to announce the installation of The Zen Den. The Zen Den is an indoor green space designed to promote well-being. It is a quiet space where people can relax in the tranquil atmosphere, meditate, take a break, de-stress, practice breathwork and center themselves. Spending time outdoors in nature is best, but when this isn’t possible, bringing elements of nature into indoor offices can improve wellbeing and reduce stress. The Zen Den features a calming, cool-color scheme and includes vines on the wall, faux succulent wall art, faux grass rugs, bean bags, and comfortable chairs. The Zen Den room is also wheelchair accessible.

Special thanks to Simpson & Simpson Garden, Dele C. Ladejobi, Dr. Paul Creason, and Jeffrey Sabol for the generous donations that made this space possible. Last but certainly not least, we are grateful for those who labored to make the Zen Den come to life: Tamara Lincoln, Student Success Instructional Aide and student workers, Ryan Guade and Sofia Galindo.

Professional Development Opportunities

Save the Date: People of Color in Library and Information Science Summit. Loyola Marymount University, Friday, July 21, 2023Call for Proposals: POCinLIS Summit!

Proposal Deadline: Friday, April 14, 2023

Event Website: https://digitalcommons.lmu.edu/pocinlis/

Submit a Proposal: https://forms.gle/zuEuyXCyN7z9ov8Q8

The People of Color in Library & Information Science (POCinLIS) Summit will take place on Friday, July 21, 2023 from 9:30 am - 3:15 pm PST at Loyola Marymount University. Registration is free, on campus parking is $15.

The mission of POCinLIS Summit is to create a productive and brave space for people of color, especially women and marginalized identities, working in the information sector. Information workers will have the opportunity to explore their work in LIS as POC and their intersecting identities. This summit invites participants to challenge and interrogate their roles and actions as information workers. This summit aims to collectively establish rules of engagement and discourse, acknowledging that dominant narratives may be disrupted. This space is created to support the research of POC librarians and create a network of POC information workers for future collaboration and self-care.

Thank You For Being A Friend

The theme Thank You For Being A Friend invites submissions that challenge what is acceptable to present upon in LIS. As POC moving through the pandemic and returning to work, we are being called upon to accomplish a lot, often with very little time to reflect and develop our practice. This year, think of the summit as a supportive counterspace for reflection, exploration, commiseration, and experimentation among trusted colleagues. We ask you to share what you are doing, what you are thinking about, and what you need support for in this moment as a summit submission.

The POCinLIS Summit is a space for collaborative conversations that explore our passions and interests. We welcome submissions that are unique, challenging, and unorthodox in other LIS spaces. Library students and library employees of all kinds are invited to submit proposals.

Need Help with Your Proposal?

Attend a POCinLIS Summit Drop-in Session! We can help with abstracts, outcomes, or just brainstorming a topic to present. Sessions are run by Aisha Conner-Gaten and Jennifer Masunaga via Zoom:

This conference is funded by the William H. Hannon Library at Loyola Marymount University and Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium (SCELC) DEI Grant. Please note POCinLIS Summit 2023 will not include presenter honorariums. We thank folks for their labor and invite them to present and spend the day with us, including lunch and a cocktail hour at the end of the day.

Have questions? Email POCinLIS@gmail.com.

      • Theme. The jobs site has a new WordPress theme, which is mobile friendly.
      • Categories. The categories previously indicated the deadline type (“First consideration”, “Open until filled”), but they now indicate job functions (“Electronic Resources”, “Information Literacy and Instruction”). The controlled vocabulary is borrowed from ALA’s job list.
      • Post expiration. Old posts will be automatically removed instead of remaining on the site indefinitely. By default, posts expire after 90 days. They will be set to “Private” rather than being deleted, so the information is still available in the system.
      • Google structured data and SEO. Posts now include schema.org metadata of type “JobPosting.” This may eventually get listings to show up in Google’s job postings. (Search “library jobs san francisco” to see an example.) A WordPress plug-in has been added to automatically alert Google of new postings.
