CLOWNS IN THE LEGISLATURE
Leading the nation in clown behavior.

If you missed last week's newsletter, we shared a petition against SB 0857/HB 1440. It is a disrespectful bill that provides exceptions to criminalizing abortion for rape and incest survivors, as long as they report their assault to police, and submit to a medical examination.

Unfortunately, there are more problematic potential laws headed our way:
  • SB 0087/HB 0048 - This bill proposes to reduce the Metropolitan Nashville Davidson County Council to no more than 20 members. It currently has 40 members.

  • SB 1368/HB 0093 - Also known as the "Third Grade Retention Bill", this bill proposes a redirection of power from the Department of Education to local education agencies in order to determine whether third or fourth grade students who previously didn't meet English language arts testing standards have improved enough to be promoted to the next grade.

Learn the ABCs and 123s of this bill during the town hall *TOMORROW*, Wednesday, February 8 at 6:30-9pm.
    📍Woodbine United Methodist Church
2621 Nolensville Pike, Nashville, TN 37211

  • SB 1407/HB 1372 - This bill proposes that a portion of Rep. John Lewis Way in Nashville, be renamed after the 45th president aka chief insurrectionist.

  • SB 1101/HB 1099 - This bill proposes a change to election laws which would no longer allow early voting. It also removes the ability for someone other than the voter to request an absentee ballot for the voter.

TEAM HIGHLIGHTS
Tamika White: Out of Office

If you've ever volunteered or partnered with us in person or virtually, you've more than likely encountered Tamika White, our super volunteer turned Director of Programs and Special Projects. She is a diligent, devoted, and dynamic person who has contributed greatly since day one. As much as we advocate for building Black power, we also recognize that rest is necessary.

On that note, we want you to know that Tamika is on sabbatical and will return in April. During this time, please direct inquiries to Director of Operations Sherese Da Silva. Incase you forget, her out of office message will remind you.

We wish Tamika the best during her time of rest and rejuvenation, and look forward to welcoming her back in April.
LJ Abraham: On the frontlines in Memphis

When it comes to standing on the right side of history, LJ Abraham, our Regional Organizing Director for West TN is always down for the People. In the wake of the vicious murder of Tyre Nichols, LJ has been co-leading protests and actions with activist and local policy analyst Amber Sherman. The pair has been working with the blessing and partnership of Tyre's family to bring the truth of his murder to light and hold those responsible and in power accountable.

We see you LJ and appreciate what you're doing.
