HAVE YOUR SAY: Port Douglas Aquatic Precinct Location

DOUGLAS Shire Council will ask the community to choose between two potential locations for a splash park in Port Douglas.

Council secured funding to build a splash park and is working towards delivering the project in 2024.

There are two locations being considered – Jalunbu Park behind the Port Douglas Surf Life Saving Club and Reynolds Park, on Davidson Street.

REMINDER || Daintree Ferry five-day closure - March 2023

THE Daintree Ferry service will cease at 12.01am on Monday 6 March 2023 and resume again at 5am on Saturday 11 March 2023.

The ferry is scheduled to be taken out of the water for Australian Maritime Safety Authority’s (AMSA) mandatory out of water inspection. AMSA inspections for this vessel are required every five years and the last one was done in March 2018.

Council Kicks Off Field Lighting Upgrade At Mossman Showgrounds

FOUR new light towers with smart technology will tackle inefficient sports field lighting at the home of the Mossman-Port Douglas Sharks Rugby League Club.

Douglas Shire Council awarded a $288,753 contact to GMH Solutions Pty Ltd for Coronation Park Sports Field Lighting project.

Grant Street Water Main nearing completion

Contractors have returned to complete the Grant Street Water Main works in February 2023. FGF will be excavating on Grant at the top end around 5 to 10 metres from Macrossan St from next Monday. This work will continue throughout the week.

We are encouraging motorists to drive to the conditions after some areas received more than 200mm in the past 24 hours! 

If its flooded, forget it.

From January 2 to February 5 this year, the following rainfall totals have been recorded in Douglas:

Mossman State School has marked 125 years!

Douglas Shire Councillors joined the school community this week to celebrate its rich educational history in our region.

Established in 1898, many fourth generational local families still attend the school today.

Congratulations Mossman State School!

Weed of the Month - Tobacco Weed

Tobacco weed is widespread in coastal districts particularly along roadsides, pastures and areas of disturbance.

The weed is a slender fast-growing herb up to 1.5m with rough/hairy oblong/oval leaves which can cause irritation to the skin.

Active Clubs Round 3 - now open!

The Department of Tourism, Innovation and Sport announced that a third round of Active Clubs opened on Wednesday 1 February 2023.

The Active Clubs program will provide funding to local and regional sport and active recreation organisations to support:

  • training and education for volunteers
  • volunteer recognition
  • equipment (on-field and off-field)
  • opportunities for participation.

Applications close: 5pm, 1 March 2023
