Epiphany Blessings, Dear Church!

What an incredible celebration we had on Sunday. Thank you so much to every hand who helped bring everything to fruition. And already, we have several things on the horizon that I’m getting excited about. But what I want to share with you today are some of the things that our confirmation students have been up to.

We’ve been studying prayer and, specifically, the Lord’s Prayer. I’ll tell you what I told them. I used to think I wasn’t good at praying or never really knew how to pray. Somewhere along the way, I’d internalized that prayer had to look a specific way and that particular words needed to be used.

I think part of that was rooted in what Jesus taught the disciples as he taught them to pray. What we now have as the Lord’s prayer is very close to what we find in the gospel of Matthew. So, I thought prayer always needed to look and sound like the Lord’s prayer.

What I missed is that the disciples ask Jesus to teach them how to pray. And what Jesus’ teaches them is an extraordinarily wonderful foundation and not the only form of prayer we have. Each petition of the Lord’s prayer represents an aspect of prayer that our own happens to include.

And what we then concluded is that prayer is much more flexible than we may have been led to believe. Even the most basic sigh and exasperation of “Oh, thank God,” is a prayer. As we concluded our time with prayer, I introduced them to other forms of prayer, and we practiced putting the Lord’s Prayer into our own words.

One of the forms of prayer that I introduced is one that I happen to appreciate, called guided meditation. The mediation we did this past Wednesday is linked here and focuses on Psalm 23. I happen to find it incredibly relaxing and rejuvenating, but I know it isn’t for everyone.
Psalm 23 Guided Meditation & Prayer
Lastly, I want to share with you the Lord’s Prayer as our confirmation students prayed in their own words.

Dear Dad, Heavenly Parent, help us keep your name holy.
Let your kingdom come to us and keep your goals in our heart
Provide us with the energy to sustain one another.
Let us forgive others as you have forgiven us.
Keep temptation afar and in all this, keep evil away.
For all this belongs to you forever. Amen

Peace & Blessings, Dear Church,

Pastor Dave
