COVID Information Commons Newsletter | February 2023
The COVID Information Commons (CIC) is a resource for researchers, students, and decision-makers from academia, government, nonprofits, and industry to collaborate, leverage others' findings, and accelerate the most promising research to mitigate the broad societal impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The CIC-Extension grant (NSF #2139391) increased the CIC corpus to over 9,000 NSF and NIH awards pertinent to various areas of COVID research, response, and recovery.

NEBDHub and the NSDC Announce Blockchain in Healthcare Today and Telehealth in Medicine Today Calls for Manuscripts

In collaboration with Blockchain in Healthcare Today (BHTY) and Telehealth in Medicine Today (THMT), the Northeast Big Data Innovation Hub and the National Student Data Corps invite data science enthusiasts, graduate students, educators, and researchers to respond to a new Call for Manuscripts (CFM) focused on data science and blockchain for healthcare.

Data Transforming Health Care Ebook
Technology is driving new opportunities to harness data, transforming health care as we know it. Agencies such as the Department of Veterans Affairs and the National Institutes of Health are developing responsible AI practices, leveraging data and dashboarding tools, and new hiring strategies to address health disparities.

PPPR Working Group Meeting
Date: February 10th
Join the newly-formed Pandemic Prevention & Policy Research (PPPR) Working Group, hosted by the COVID Information Commons (CIC). Working Group members convene to discuss pandemic and epidemic prevention strategies. PPPR meetings are held on the second Friday of each month at 11AM (ET) - visit the Working Group website to learn more.
National Big Data Health Science Conference
Dates: February 10th - 11th 
The National Big Data Health Science Conference is a signature annual event of the Big Data Health Science Center (BDHSC). This 4th annual conference will include innovative plenary sessions, panels, and workshops that emphasize the role of interdisciplinary collaboration in Big Data applications and advancements in the health sciences.
EI Working Group Meeting
Date: February 15th
Members of the Education Impacts (EI) Working Group, supported by the COVID Information Commons (CIC), meet the third Wednesday of each month at 1PM (ET) to discuss the COVID-19 pandemic's long-term impact on educational systems. Learn more by visiting the EI Working Group webpage
SIHO Working Group Meeting
Date: March 6th
The COVID Information Commons' (CIC) Social Impacts & Health Outcomes (SIHO) Working Group meets the first Monday of each month at 1PM (ET). The Tufts University Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy presents the Tufts Nutrition Data Symposium (TNDS). This symposium establishes a necessary forum where students, researchers, academics, and young professionals can share, discuss, and explore diverse opinions, experiences, and expertise on emerging topics in the fields of nutrition and public health sciences.
2023 Shanks Workshop on Advances in
Mathematical & Theoretical Biology
Dates: March 17th - 19th 
This workshop will consider the modeling and analysis of ordinary and partial differential equation models from different aspects of biological applications, such as infectious diseases, cancer and treatment, and population dynamics.

Cancer AI Research: Computational Approaches Addressing Imperfect Data

Dates: April 3rd - 4th
The goals of this National Cancer Institute workshop are to (1) examine the state of the science for AI methods designed to operate on noisy, complex, or low-dimensional data, (2) explore how these methods may be applied to key areas of cancer research, and (3) discuss processes for identifying the biological questions that will motivate further advances in machine learning.

NSF Science and Technology Studies (STS) Program
The Science and Technology Studies (STS) program supports proposals that use historical, philosophical and social scientific methods to investigate STEM theory and practice.
Proposals next due February 2nd.
NIH NOSI: Neurological and Neurocognitive Sequelae from SARS-CoV-2 Infection and COVID-19 in Aging and Age-Related Neurodegeneration

The research objectives of this NOSI are to rapidly expand the knowledge base on acute and long-term neurological and neurocognitive sequelae of COVID-19, promoting collaborative efforts from diverse researchers.
Applications due May 8th.

NIH NOSI: Administrative Supplements for
COVID-19 Impacted NIMH Research
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) recognizes that investigators have experienced significant research project delays due to COVID-19, limiting research progress. The NIMH is accepting administrative supplement applications in the final year of the parent award.
Applications due June 2nd.
NIH NOSI: Emerging Viral Infections and their Impact on the Male and Female Reproductive Tract

The NIH invites applications proposing research on emerging viral infections thought to primarily impact non-reproductive sites, but may also affect the male and/or female reproductive tract. 
Applications accepted through July 16th.

Big Data Scientist Training Enhancement Program (BD-STEP)
BD-STEP is a two-year fellowship opportunity managed jointly by the National Cancer Institute and the Veterans Health Administration that uses data science to improve outcomes for cancer patients. BD-STEP graduates gain diverse skillsets needed in healthcare data science careers.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis through August 31st.

AHRQ Conference Grant Programs

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) announces its Conference Grant Program. Grants will not exceed $50,000 direct costs annually over any project period duration. 
Applications accepted through November 2026. 

COVID Information Commons PI Survey
 
The COVID Information Commons (CIC) invites all NSF and NIH PIs who have received COVID-19 related funding to update the public information about their award via a voluntary survey. All updates will be reflected in the CIC PI Database.
